    Summary

    Screen

The movie begins with Ai, a young girl, moving to Animal Village for the summer. After working for Tom Nook delivering items, Ai befriends four of the town's residents, Minina, Rita, Kaiman, and Yu, participating in various activities. Ai begins to find a series of anonymous messages in bottles that say that a miracle will occur during the next Winter Festival if pine trees are planted in specific points of the town.

Ai complies with the messages and starts planting the trees, he believes that the messages could have been placed by the aliens. During the fall, Minia scolds Ai for not attending rita's going away party, which comes as a big surprise. Ai is left heartbroken, learning that Rita has left to embark on a career in fashion design. Rita sends Ai an apology letter, explaining that a goodbye would have been too upsetting, and encourages her to go on her own personal journey. Minina apologizes to Ai for her harsh reaction.

When winter comes all the pine trees that Ai had planted are fully grown and decorated with Christmas lights. A spaceship lands in the middle of the forest, and Gulliver, a seagull, emerges. Gulliver, who had planted the bottles in order to make a grand entrance dressed as an alien, asks the villagers for help in locating some of the pieces that fell off his ship during the descent. Ai, Minina, Yu, and Kaiman go to a cave, where Yu claims to have seen one of the pieces during the fall. Rita appears and helps them in the cave.

The five retrieve the lost piece and return to Gulliver, who discovers that there is one more piece. The leftover piece turns out to be a wounded UFO, one of a larger group that was drawn to the village due to the pattern formed by the illumination of the pine trees planted by Ai. The injured UFO reunites with his group, and when they leave, they create a constellation in the night sky similar to Ai. Ai then wins the Winter Festival competition for best decoration, feeling for the first time like a true member of the village.

    Production

The film was first announced in a May 2006 issue of the Japanese online magazine Hochi Shimbun, with a theatrical release date for the following December. The film went into production due to the success of Animal Crossing: Wild World, released for the Nintendo DS the previous year, which had sold more than 3 million copies in Japan alone. Jōji Shimura joined to direct, having previously worked on manga-to-film adaptations such as Shin Angyo Onshi and Master Keaton. Some Animal Crossing staff members assisted with the production and worked to give the film the same audience appeal as video games.

Those who ordered advance tickets before the film's debut were eligible to receive coupons that could be redeemed for hard-to-get gold tools in Animal Crossing: Wild World. In October 2007, Nintendo of America made a statement that they had no "plans" to bring the film to North America.

    Music

The music for the film was contributed by series composer Kazumi Totaka and arranged by Tomoki Hasegawa, with the film featuring numerous musical themes from the games. The official title song of the film is "Mori and Ikō" (森 へ 行 こ う Let's go to the forest) by Taeko Onuki, which plays the ending credits. An official soundtrack album was released in Japan on December 13, 2006 by VAP containing 46 tracks from the film along with five additional songs from Animal Crossing: Wild World.

    Business launch event

The film was released in theaters in Japan on December 16, 2006, where it was distributed by Toho. The film debuted in Japanese theaters as the third-highest grossing film of its opening weekend behind the Iwo Jima and Eragon films, earning approximately ¥ 246 million yen ($ 2,085,729). At the end of 2006, the film had a total revenue of ¥ 1,526 billion yen ($ 12,915,432), making it the 1,7th highest grossing film of that year in the region. The film had lifetime earnings of approximately ¥ 16,216,731 billion ($ 2007) at the end of its theatrical release in 17, making it the 2006th highest-grossing film of that year when combined with its December box office total of XNUMX.

The film was released on Region 2 DVD in Japan on July 25, 2007 by VAP. Copies of the first print also included an Animal Crossing themed carry bag.

    Curiosities

    • During the credits sequence, a gift attached to a balloon appears in each scene.
    • The maid outfit that Minina receives is actually a waitress outfit in Wild World.
    • Estrella seems to be friendlier in the movie.
    • Interestingly, even though the maximum limit for Neighbors in Wild World is eight, there are nine Neighbors in Villa de los Animales.
