HR Axes It is a tool to cut down trees to remove them. In Dōbutsu no Mori, there is only one ax available and it is unbreakable. However, in all subsequent games, common axes have a limited number of uses and will degrade with each use before breaking.

Axes are mainly used for felling trees, which will fall after taking three hits, hitting the trees can cause any object to fall from the tree, including fruits and beehives. Carving a tree results in a stump that must be removed using a Shovel. Using an ax when there are no surrounding obstacles, the player swings and misses. Attempting to hit a neighbor with an ax will result in the hit missing or the ax simply bouncing off of them. Axes used in any game after Dōbutsu no Mori have a limited number of uses before breaking, requiring them to be replaced. As an ax degrades, its inventory icon becomes visibly more worn with a crack that appears to be getting bigger. The axes can also be used as a substitute for the Shovel to hit rocks to find Bugs, Berries and Minerals. However, this will also quickly degrade the ax.
More advanced variations of the ax are available; a silver ax is more durable and a golden ax is faster to use and unbreakable. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the rental ax available on Tortimer Island is also unbreakable, even though it appears to be identical to a common ax. Finally, in New Leaf, the silver and gold ax can create special designs on the stumps left after cutting down a tree.
