    Actual event information

Children's Day (こ ど も の 日 Kodomo no hi) is a Japanese national holiday that takes place on May 5. On this day, children's personalities are respected and their happiness is celebrated.

Today, families hoist carp-shaped koinobori kites, one for each family member. The choice of the carp as an image is no accident: for the Japanese, the carp symbolizes strength, since they are admired for their strength, tenacity and dexterity when it comes to climbing rivers against the current. Koinobori are silk sleeves in the shape of a “koi” (carp fish), which are hoisted on a flag pole and inflated with the wind; when flaming it seems that this fish comes to life by making subtle movements similar to those that the "koi" executes in the water. In the highest part of the mast there is a colored sleeve that represents a flying dragon. Later the largest koinobori, which is a black carp, represents the father. Next, a smaller red carp is placed that represents the mother and behind it the small koinobori that represent each of the children are placed. In addition, during this celebration, children usually wear the traditional Japanese helmet, the kabuto, made of paper. The kabuto is a symbol of a strong and healthy male child.
