    Islanders

Un islander is an inhabitant who lives on the Island, an island that was introduced in the updated port of the original Dōbutsu no Mori, titled Animal Crossing. Despite the different name, the islanders are no different from the neighbors, with the exception of slightly different dialogues and behaviors. However, in Dōbutsu no Mori e +, no islanders are present on the Island by default, including the original Animal Crossing islanders, and they can only be brought to the island by using their e-Reader cards.

There are 36 islanders in total, starting with the original 18 islanders at Animal Crossing. Dōbutsu no Mori e +, an expanded update to Animal Crossing, adds an additional eighteen islanders. In Animal Crossing: Wild World, only six islanders appear, now as normal neighbors. City Folk sees a return of four other missing islanders in Wild World, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf sees a return of six more islanders, including six more in the game's Welcome amiibo update.

    Behavior

Islanders are no different than normal neighbors, as they both have the same personality types and general interaction. However, lazy, grumpy, and normal islanders exhibit behavior unique to their counterparts. For example, grumpy neighbors behave similarly to the Snobbish personality introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and may have been the inspiration for the creation of that personality. The normal islanders are also very plain and old sounding, using phrases like "listen to my words" or that they "had a dream" of a certain event. However, they are also childish and reckless, talking about living in "a fairy tale" or describing their feelings in extreme detail. Lazy neighbors behave in a totally opposite way to their counterparts, expressing their love of adventure and exploration, stubbornly stating that they "don't listen to anyone", making them more like the grumpy personality.

Unlike the neighbors, the islanders' houses have little to no furniture, so they will request player-specific furniture to decorate them. If the player gives them the requested furniture, they will use it to decorate their home and express their gratitude by giving the player a special gift that can only be obtained from them. All Dōbutsu no Mori e + islanders will request the same furniture as the original Animal Crossing islanders, the only difference being the wallpaper and the flooring. Female islanders wear red aloha shirts by default, while male islanders wear blue aloha shirts. Additionally, most female islanders wear a hibiscus in their hair, a common tradition in Pacific Island culture, while most male islanders wear a straw hat, although with several exceptions. This does not change among the islanders.

    Game Boy Advance connection

If there is a connection between a Nintendo GameCube and a Game Boy Advance, the player can interact with the islander on the Game Boy Advance through a small minigame. For this minigame, each islander has a favorite fruit and a fruit they are allergic to. If the player gives the islander their favorite fruit, they will drop Berries or NES Games, which can be collected upon returning to the island. However, if they are given the allergic fruit, they will get angry and give no more Berries. This can also be done by repeatedly tapping the islander, which will annoy them. Also, if a tool is dropped, the islander can use that tool to perform certain actions. For example, if the player gives them a Fishing Rod, they will use it to catch fish, or they will cut down trees if they are given an Ax. The Nets, however, do not provide any effect, and the islander will simply take it away without using it. This feature is removed in Dōbutsu no Mori e +, as the player no longer requires a linked Game Boy Advance to access the island.
