    PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, better known by its acronym PUBG, is a multiplayer online battle royale video game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of the South Korean video game company Bluehole. It is based on a series of previous mods created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other titles, using the movie Battle Royale as inspiration; later expanding to a solo video game under his supervision.

In PUBG, up to 100 players parachute onto an island, searching for weapons and equipment to kill others while preventing them from killing themselves. The available safe area of the game map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into more closed areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the game.

The game was released for Microsoft Windows via Steam, in the form of an early access beta, in March 2017; with a full release on December 20 of that year. That same month, Microsoft Studios also released it for Xbox One via Xbox Game Preview. A few months later, the Chinese company Tencent Games adapted and localized it, with two mobile versions for Android and iOS released. This version is better known as PUBG Mobile.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is one of the best-selling video games in history, with more than fifty million copies for all platforms in June 2018. Also, the Windows version has a maximum of more than three million consecutive players on Steam, the figure highest on that platform.

In 2019 PUBG Lite was released, a free version of the game and with fewer requirements.

A year later, specifically on April 28, 2020, the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - Pioneer Edition version would be released for Google Stadia.

    Summary

    Gameplay

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a player versus player action video game in which up to one hundred players fight in a battle royale, a large-scale type of last man standing deathmatch in which players fight to stay alive. Players can choose to enter matches alone, or with a small team of up to four people. In either case, the last person or team left alive wins the game.

Each match begins with players parachuting from an airplane into a map area approximately 8x8 kilometers in size. The plane's flight path across the map varies with each round, requiring players to quickly determine the best time to launch and parachute to the ground. Players start with no equipment other than custom clothing selections that do not affect the game. Once they land, players can search buildings and other sites to find weapons, vehicles, armor, and other equipment. These items are randomly distributed across the map at the start of a game, and certain high-risk areas tend to have better equipment. Dead players can also be looted to acquire their gear. Players can choose to play from a first-person or third-person perspective, each with their own combat advantages and disadvantages and knowledge of context; although specific server settings can be used to force all players to use perspective to remove some perks.

Every few minutes, the playable area of the map begins to shrink to a random location, with any player caught outside the safe area taking increased damage, and ultimately being eliminated if the safe zone is not entered in time. In the game, players see the boundary as a gleaming blue wall that contracts over time. This results in a more confined map, which in turn increases the chances of encounters. During the course of the game, random regions on the map are highlighted in red and bombarded, posing a threat to players who remain in that area. In both cases, players are warned a few minutes before these events, giving them time to relocate safely. At random, a plane will fly over various parts of the playable map and drop a loot pack, containing items that cannot normally be obtained during normal gameplay. These packages emit highly visible red smoke, drawing interested players closer to it and creating more confrontations. On average, a full round takes no more than 30 minutes.

At the end of each round, players earn in-game money based on how long they survived, how many more players they had killed, and how much damage they dealt to other players. Currency is used to purchase boxes containing cosmetic items for character or weapon customization. A rotating event mode was added to the game around March 2018. These events change the normal rules of the game, such as establishing larger teams or squads or altering the distribution of weapons and armor on the game map.

    Development

Lead designer Brendan Greene had previously created the mod for ARMA 2 DayZ: Battle Royale, a variation on the popular DayZ mod. It caught his interest, so he started playing it with his custom server, learning to code in the process. Due to his own negative experience with multiplayer shooters, he wanted to create his own mod with new and custom elements; like now larger maps difficult to memorize, or placing random items on them.

Once DayZ continued his path as a standalone title, interest in his mod waned, causing him to transition into development for the ARMA 3 title. At that time, Sony Online Entertainment became interested in his work and hired him as a consultant. for the development of H1Z1. Finally, in February 2016 Sony divided the brand into two separate games: the survival mode H1Z1: Just Survive, and the battle royale version H1Z1: King of the Kill; at the same time that his consultation period with Sony expired.

In parallel, the South Korean studio Ginno Games was acquired by Bluehole. Its director Chang-han Kim recognized that producing a game that was successful in his country would lead to it being launched globally. For this reason, he wanted to produce a new title for computers, following the same model as other productions of the company that were successful for mobile devices. After playing DayZ, he ended up learning about Greene's work and contacted him.

At the same time that Greene was leaving Sony Online, Kim offered him the opportunity to work on a new concept of battle royale video game. A few weeks later, he became the creative director for Bluehole. Overseeing development from South Korea, it was the first time that a South Korean studio entrusted the task to a foreign person.

The main theme of the game was composed by Tom Salta, who was personally selected by Green, as he and the team were looking for an "electronic hybrid orchestral theme" that would give players a "great focus", keeping them "resolutely determined" until the game begins.
