Playing Fortnite with 4G: how much data does it consume? Is it worth playing without WiFi?

During the holidays, many of us change residences for a few days, weeks or, if you are a lucky guy, months. The normal thing is to move to a house on the beach or in the mountains, often without an Internet connection, or to a hotel that does not have to offer free WiFi either. For many, that means stopping playing online and, specifically, losing sight of Fortnite for a few days ... right now that Season 5 has just started.

If this is your case, and you are wondering how to continue playing Fortnite without WiFi connection during the holidays, You'll be glad to know that there are ways. And we do not mean to sneak into the WiFi networks without password of the neighbors. If you have a mobile phone with a 4G data rate, no matter how small, you don't have to stop playing ...

It does not matter if it is an Android smartphone or an iPhone: both offer the possibility of creating a "hotspot", a WiFi access point that draws directly from our data. In Android 8.0, for example, you will find this option in Settings / Network and Internet / Access point / Device connection / Create WiFi access point.

You can configure the access point that you are going to create by putting the name and password you want so that you can easily identify it (and connect to it), and then configure that connection on the device on which you are going to play, be it a Nintendo Switch, an iPad or a PC.

Many of you will be thinking "yes, that's very good. But how much data does playing Fortnite consume with the 4G mobile connection?"Well, surprisingly few, very few. We have carried out these measurements using Datally, the Google app to measure data consumption on mobile phones and, as we say, the results are surprising because of how well optimized the game's online code is.

We have played using the same conditions in all three cases: without being connected to any router or domestic connection, pulling only mobile data through a WiFi access point created with an Android mobile and without using voice chat. That is to say, minimizing to the maximum the consumption that can cause the game.

In addition, in all three cases Fortnite was already installed and updated on each platform. We have limited the playing time to one hour, in some cases a little longer to finish the current game (about 65 minutes at most). We have tried everything: playing alone, in squad, 50 vs 50, going "to sack" and dying quickly to return to the lobby and look for a game again, playing more conservatively and reaching the last circle. An hour goes a long way.

Therefore, if you are one of those who are wondering how could you keep playing Fortnite without WiFi during the holidays, what we are going to tell you next may interest you ... Playing for an hour in iPad, sharing the data from an Android phone and playing for an hour, data consumption has been 36,9 MB per hour (65 minutes). That is, 3 hours would be 110 megabytes, and a giga would give for about 27 hours of play, approximately. If your data plan has more GB, you would only have to multiply this last data by the number of gigabytes you have to know how much it will give you.

And how much mobile data does it consume to play Fortnite for an hour on Nintendo Switch? Well surprisingly, consumption is even lower. Under the same conditions, we played 65 minutes (to finish the current game), and consumption dropped to 31,8 MB per hour. 3 hours of play would mean less than 100 MB (95,4 MB), while 1 GB of data would give us 31,4 hours of play.

And if I take my PS4 on vacation, how many megabytes of data does an hour of play consume in Fortnite for PS4? Well, we can say that the Sony console follows a similar trend, with one caveat. As soon as you turn on the access point and configure the connection in the console, the data consumption has jumped 11,6 MB, perhaps because it sends up and down packets to verify the width.

Afterwards, what has been the game hour itself has consumed a total of 35,3 MB, which means that in one hour we will consume 105,9 MB and a rate with 1 GB of data will give us for about 28,3 hours of play.

All these data, of course, should not be considered as an absolute truth: a more moved game may generate more data consumption (to calculate, send and receive, for example, the position of each bullet that we shoot and shoot at us), but they serve as an approximation to get an idea.

Similarly, if the game receives some kind of "heavy" patch or a "hot fix" to fix a problem, the data download will also go up. But, with the updated game, what is "playing" itself is not something that exhausts the data in the blink of an eye.

It goes without saying that, in addition, the gaming experience is very, very smooth. We have not noticed difference, no lag, no delay or "backfire" compared to playing with a domestic connection, through a router. Definitely, epic Games you have done your homework here very well.

If you are thinking of updating your data plan or changing your operator, you can benefit from some discounts using these Yoigo coupons or using the rate comparator in stores like The Phone House.

So you already know, If you are on vacation or are going to leave shortly and you do not have a WiFi connection, you do not have to stop playing Fortnite completely. With a minimum data rate you can continue to play a few games a day (one or two hours a day, more if you have 4-5 GB), although having the beach or the mountains at hand ...
