In 2003, three students from the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University School of Science and Technology), Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen and Dikert Kim participated in the "Assembly Demo Party" mobile game development competition, sponsored by Nokia and HP. The victory with the real-time multiplayer game King of the Cabbage World forced the trio to create their own company, Relude. The game was sold to Sumea (now known as Sumea Studios, as part of Digital Chocolate) and they changed their name to Mole War, which became the first real-time multiplayer game marketed for mobile phones in the world.

In January 2005, Relude received its first investment journey from an angelic investor, and the company changed its name to Rovio Mobile.3

In December 2009 Rovio released Angry Birds, a puzzle video game for the iPhone. Angry Birds has been downloaded more than a billion times, 4 of which 25% of downloads have been paid, making it one of the best-selling games on the Apple App Store.
