    Information about the actual event

Arbor Day (식목일, Sikmogil) is celebrated in South Korea every April 5. It is a tree-planting campaign throughout the country, in government offices, towns, military bases, workplaces and schools. Korea, having been an agrarian society for most of its history, has always considered April a good time for planting.

The fervor for tree planting grew, especially after the Japanese colonial occupation (1910-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953), which left the country's hills and mountains almost bare, either because of the logging for fuel or construction, or simply because it burned.

In the XNUMXst century, National Tree Day has become more than just the reforestation of mountains and hills. With climate change, the greenhouse effect and other environmental hazards around the world, it has become a must to increase the number of trees, which not only help to alleviate floods and other types of natural disasters, but also to capture the carbon dioxide and emit oxygen.

The hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea. This flower appears on national emblems and Korea is poetically compared to this flower in the South Korean national anthem. The flower's name in Korea is mugunghwa (무궁화). The symbolic meaning of the flower is derived from the Korean word mugung, which means "eternity."
