EA patents a new non-linear battle pass system that would allow you to progress more freely towards rewards

Battle passes have become an almost indispensable element in multiplayer titles or games oriented to being a service. However, it seems that EA could add some changes to this system.

With the emergence of titles like Fortnite, which introduced the now famous battle pass; A series of levels with rewards that can be obtained by completing challenges and achieving objectives, the mentality of progress in these types of games changed radically. Now it is rare not to see a competitive title that presents this system.

Although there are some differences, they all share the same idea, a linear path that forces the player to reach the highest levels to get the juiciest rewards. However, a recently filed patent by EA could add a little more variety to this already established battle pass system.

Electronic Arts has filed a patent describing a non-linear battle pass where the player can progress on a reward map made up of nodes. Hence, this seems to point out that the player could try to find the rewards they want the most and focus on following the fastest path to them.

We attach the description of this system: The seasonal rewards system can provide users a non-linear map that allows them to choose how to progress on the reward map when advancing or leveling up a virtual character or a user account within the video game. The reward map provides a series of nodes connected by links, resulting in a plurality of paths or tracks that a user can select during progress within the video game.

Although a more visual concept is not provided, the result could resemble a skill tree that we could find in an RPG game, but with cosmetic rewards and other additions. It must be said that this is a patent and it is not yet known if EA will end up implementing it.

Of course, many of their games sound like perfect candidates for this new battle pass system. The most anticipated could be Battlefield 6, whose presentation will be in June. Another that may present changes is Apex Legends, one of the jewels in the crown for EA currently and the game service by law of the company.
