Expectations were disappointed and the title was wrecked among the bad ratings of the critics and the flight of the players so that the game remained in free trial for a long period. Final Fantasy XIV had become a danger both for the credibility of the series and for the finances of the company. We needed a turning point, the most radical possible.

In 2012, the remaining players noticed something in the sky. A familiar scenario to those who knew Final Fantasy VII. Initially it was just a celestial body in the distance but over time Dalamud, one of the two moons of the planet, became an increasingly close and oppressive presence. In September of the same year came the patch 1.23ba to score the end of an era.

Dalamud had entered the planet's atmosphere by rendering it unrecognizable. The artificial moon dominated the lightning-lit horizon both day and night. The silence was broken only by thunder, while all the music had been replaced by a distorted version of the main theme Answers. In the areas of Eorzea the monsters multiplied and it was only a matter of time before they arrived in the cities. On November 11, 2012 the servers were closed and Square Enix released the video it granted to Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 a more epic conclusion than its troubled life cycle had been.

The rest is (videogame) history of the present day. Already in 2010 Naoki Yoshida, just two months after its release, had replaced director and producer accompanying version 1.0 towards the end. In 2013, Final Fantasy XIV would return in the A Realm Reborn version becoming a successful MMORPG and one of the textbook cases of successful rescue of an online game.

Shadowbringers is considered not only the best story of Final Fantasy XIV but also one of the best chapters in the saga of recent years. If you want to start your adventure in Eorzea you can do it by purchasing the base game and the first two expansions on Amazon.
