Riku is one of the protagonists of the Kingdom Hearts saga. Lives in the Destiny Islands. He is the best friend of Sora and Kairi and is Master of the Keyblade. Riku is five years old in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, fifteen during the events of Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and sixteen in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

Appearance

Generally, Riku has an athletic and muscular demeanor in some areas. He has greenish-blue eyes and silver-colored hair. In Kingdom Hearts II, he usually dresses like an ordinary teenager, in jeans and white trainers, his appearance is informal. Interestingly, during Terra's visit to the Destiny Islands in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, he observes Riku from Kingdom Hearts II after a brief reveal from young Master Xehanort. This could make us think that Master Xehanort could be a distant relative of Riku, as they are both native to the islands and have a similar haircut. However, nothing has been confirmed about it yet, in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Riku's hair is short.

Personality

Riku has experienced multiple personality changes throughout his life. During his childhood and until the day he left his islands, Riku was an energetic and carefree boy who all he wanted was to live adventures far from his world. But it was precisely his cravings that made him fall into an abyss of darkness. After the destruction of the Destiny Islands, Riku is possessed by Ansem and joins Maleficent, becoming darker and more hostile, even going so far as to harm third parties in order to achieve his own goals. After the events of the first Kingdom Hearts, Riku becomes more melancholic and fragile, due to the fear he feels towards the darkness of his heart. However, the events of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories help him to accept the darkness within, becoming stronger in character and spirit. Finally, between the events of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts II, Riku is a serious, cold-minded teenager whose sole goal is to help Sora awaken from his slumber. His fears of the darkness in his heart have diminished considerably, although he is aware that they are still there.

Apart from all this, there are aspects of Riku's personality that do not change at any time, such as the fact that he always wants to do things alone and in his own way.

Sora's childhood friend. Haunted by darkness and manipulated by Maleficent and Ansem, Riku confronted Sora. Riku sacrificed himself alongside the king to seal the entrance to darkness, both of them trapped on the other side. Sora travels hoping to find his friend.

Healing Potion (3PH); Resets the group's VT. MP cost: 99. Use this ability freely.

Eternal Session (3PH); Limit Command with which Sora and Riku execute the Session attack. Consumes all of Sora's MPs.

Support

Extraobjects (2PH); Increases the effect of healing items in battle.

Hurry PM ++ (5PH); When you consume all the MP, you can recover it right away.

Defensor (3PH); Increase defense in extreme situations.

Last Rattle (4PH); Ensures 1 HP point when taking damage from a very strong attack.

Once more (4PH); Ensures 1 HP point when taking damage from a combo.

Auto Limit (1PH); If available, the reaction command changes to Limit.

Ultracure (3PH); Quickly revive a downed ally and return high HP.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Riku can only do tricks when in Dark Mode. The available cheats are:

Dark Razia; You have to gather the value of 27 with the Devora Almas (9-9-9), repeatedly attacks rivals.
Dark Flame; You have to collect the total value between 16 and 25 with Devour Souls (ex. 7-5-9), launch a discharge of dark energy.
Dark Strike; You have to gather the total value between 5 and 15 with Devour Souls (ex. 5-6-3), jump and attack from the heights.
Milagro; Mickey restores your VT, your deck and stuns and damages enemies, the more Mickey cards are used the more damage is dealt and the more VT is recovered.

Etymology

The name Riku is derived from the Japanese word for "Earth".

Curiosities

In Kingdom Hearts the name that Riku chooses for his raft in the Destiny Islands (Highwind) is the name of the flying ship from Final Fantasy VII.

In the battle against Riku in the Destiny Islands, the maximum number of points you can reach by defeating him is 100; from there, the numbers will not go up and you will not receive any more potions.

The Kingdom Hearts trio are named after the 3 primary elements of nature (common in Japanese culture): Sora means "Sky", Riku means "Earth" and Kairi means "Ocean". This can be related to the main characters in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, where their Latin names are translated: Ventus means "Wind", Terra means "Earth" and Aqua means "Water". This shows us a correlation between the characters and their personalities respectively.
Although he is still the same age in Dream Drop Distance, Riku looks younger than in Kingdom Hearts II.
Despite the discussion as to whether Riku consciously opened the lock to his world or not, in the Manga Riku's eyes seem to be in a kind of hypnosis while doing so.
Riku at the moment, is the only one of his group of friends who has never lost his heart or obtained a Nobody.
