CD Projekt RED apologizes for Cyberpunk 2077 on video, and announces plans for updates and next-gen

The founder of CD Projekt RED publicly apologizes for Cyberpunk 2077 in a video, and announces his plans for updates and next gen releases.

Cyberpunk 2077 came out a month ago, and since then nothing has been the same. Despite the great reviews (made with the PC version), and sweeping sales, the console version performed so poorly that it opened an unprecedented crisis at the CD Projekt RED studio. The company had to accept the thousands of returns of the game on consoles, while working around the clock on patches to calm fans (and shareholders).

Now the founder of the studio Marcin Iwinski Launch a much more personal statement, on video, no statements on yellow backgrounds. Iwinski apologizes: "I, and the entire management team, deeply regret, and this is the video in which I publicly assume my responsibility."

    Dear gamers,
Below, you’ll find CD PROJEKT’s co-founder’s personal explanation of what the days leading up to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 looked like, sharing the studio’s perspective on what happened with the game on old-generation consoles. pic.twitter.com/XjdCKizewq

"Please don't blame any of our teams for what happened, they are all incredibly hard-working and talented. The board of directors and I are the final decision makers, and it was our decision to launch the game. It was never our intention that this will happen. We assure you that we will do everything in our power to regain your trust. "

But how is it possible that they could approve a game in that state? Iwinski explains that they had a lot of difficulties because their main objective was to make the game was its best on PC, and then adapt it to consoles (including PS4 and Xbox One, seven-year-old hardware). Iwinski explains that in the last few weeks (remember that there was a delay of three weeks at the last minute) they achieved a lot of improvements in the consoles, and the testing processes did not see many of the problems that would later be in the version that was released on the market.

Regarding the analyzes, he explains that they sent the keys of the PC version ("a not perfect version, but of which we are very proud") at the beginning of December, but they were working on optimizations for consoles literally until the last day, noticing progress on a daily basis. That is why they did not distribute console review keys until December 8, two days before it hit the stores.

PS5 and Xbox Series X versions ... for the second half of 2021

For the future, they state that they will focus on releasing patches and updates regularly. In 10 days there will be one, and soon after there will be another more significant update (for both consoles and PC). His plans for free DLC, scheduled for just after launch, are postponed, but still planned for 2021. He has not mentioned multiplayer (which is treated as a separate project at CDPR).

Versions optimized for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X remain in 2021, but judging by the image, it seems that they will come out in the second half of the year. Cyberpunk 2077, in its versions of PS4 and One, is playable on PS5 and XSX, with important improvements, but for 2021 a native version will be released on these consoles (with a free update if you had it in old gen).
