Cyberpunk 2077 analysis on the PS4 and Xbox One versions

In our analysis of Cyberpunk 2077 we already anticipated that, as soon as possible, we would do the review on current consoles, PS4 and Xbox One. We wanted to test how the CD Project RED game performs on less powerful machines. This analysis corresponds to version 1.04 of the game played on "base" PS4 not in the PRO version.

We already noticed it in the Cyberpunk 2077 analysis for PC. A very important part of the game is in its ambitious technical section ... and does not perform the same in all versions. At the time, the company allowed us to review the game on PC (with quite impressive specifications, which allowed us to play in 4K, 60 FPS, with ray tracing, DLSS).

But it has caught our attention that no console codes have been distributed to the press. Well, we have already had the opportunity to play the version on the "old machines", PS4 and Xbox One. And the experience is very different. We have decided to publish a new analysis of the game, with PS1.04 version 4, taking into account that the game will correct some of its defects in the coming weeks.

According to the CD Projekt RED plan, a patch will be released this week It improves the bugs that appear in the console version, and the update plan includes two additional big patches for January and February. Despite this improvement plan, the polish studio has apologized by the situation in which the game is and has encouraged users to return it if they are not satisfied.

The version may improve considerably in February, butworth cyberpunk 2077 en PS4 y Xbox One Today? When the game was originally announced in 2012, these consoles appeared in the available formats, so a more streamlined version could be expected. Here we talk about the problems of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. Now let's do a detailed analysis of what the game offers.

The future was not like that

Regarding history and portraits of the charactersCyberpuk 2077 on PS4 is the same as the game we reviewed on PC. On the one hand, the main story and the secondary missions are written with a firm hand, and the portrayal of the secondary characters, such as Jackie Welles, Judy, Panama, Rogue ... continues to seem to us the best that the genre has come up with. Here we tell you how to get all the endings of the game.

They are a handful of characters trapped in the city, with many nuances and whom (thanks to a great performance) we come to love, respect or hate ... and who make up who V becomes, our character, created in an editor that in this version if it seems just as powerful (with cuts in the resolution, of course).

There are other aspects to highlight in the narrative aspect; one of them is the character of Johnny Silverhand (al que interpreta Keanu Reeves), and that accompanies us for most of the story (which we can complete in 25 hours if we do not stop at the secondary schools and "commissions" but which can be multiplied to more than 100 if we want to soak up Night City).

And another of its virtues is that the structure of the missions is committed to variety. We can forget about the classic errand tasks; In general, all gigs involve "detective" travel, conversation, combat, and investigative stretches, with the inevitable influences of Blade Runner. And the confrontations can be resolved in three different ways, betting on the confrontations in the first person (with firearms or melee), infiltration and as a "netrunner" hacking devices and implants to act in our favor.

But To what extent do all these mechanics work with the performance of current consoles?? Both gunplay and vehicle driving suffer from the low frame rate. While aiming and shooting is a joy at 60 FPS, below 30 (the case at hand) we have the feeling that there is a certain "input lag" and more precise movements - such as headshots - are quite difficult .

It is not "unplayable" far from it, but it requires an effort on the part of the player, and makes us have to "fight" with the controls in the best moments.

    The twilight of Night City

Night City is the other great protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077. It is a huge megalopolis divided into different districts, and that at its enormous horizontal extension, joins the construction vertically, with different levels in buildings and also below ground level. A very important part of the game is that we "create" the setting.

Again, on PC, it seemed like a window to the future; a city full of secrets and things to discover, and full of characters that seemed "alive". It was the most similar to Los Angeles by Blade Runner or a la Neo Tokio by Akira, with a combination of decaying technology, holograms and neon signs ... and a lot of NPCs crowding its streets, but on PS4 we have found a very different picture.

Console experience is spoiled by poor optimization. Not only is it about the drop in resolution (the game goes down to 720p, and even below, and shows blurry textures on posters and facades) but when we move through the most populated areas, it suffers small freezes every few seconds. Some textures take several seconds to load, and passerby patterns repeat.

When we travel by car or are in the middle of a more "scripted" section of the game, the feeling is better, but all these glitches "take" us out of the setting, because they are quite common. The city that was designed to amaze us is left in a papier-mâché stage. And yet, the design of some elements continues to convey quite well the feeling of visiting this city of the future. You can see the sex sequences in Cyberpunk 2077 as an example of the atmosphere that is breathed in the city.

Defects that do not allow you to see the game in Cyberpunk 2077

No doubt at the heart of Cyberpunk 2077 beats a great gameeven in the state it is in right now. The question is whether we are able to enjoy that core, with all the flaws that stand in our way. And the truth is that it is difficult. Even when we understand that they are machines from 7 years ago trying to move a completely "next gen" game.

Cyberpunk 2077 analysis on the PS4 and Xbox One versions

In this section, the experience of each one is crucial. It depends on the "glitches" that we find, if the game "breaks" or not when we reach a certain point in the story, or how we take the exploration. In our case, in the first mission in Night City, The Rescue, everything has worked quite well for us, even with good destruction effects in the shootings, until the event in which the trauma team appears, which has not been activated, what that has forced us to restart from the previous save point.

The worst thing is that it is not something occasional, the game has also crashed when trying to raise skills during a conversation, or the camera has been "frozen" while driving ... and each user is encountering their own "barriers" such as doors that do not open when they should , characters that do not respond to our phrases in a relevant dialogue and inaccessible places. It's hard to believe that the game has passed a testing phase.

Cyberpunk 2077 analysis on the PS4 and Xbox One versions

Regarding the technical section in general, the experience is quite poor. It is not necessary to compare it with the megaton that we play on PC. We find objects that do not cast shadows, antialiasing failures that generate jagged edges, elements that flicker, much longer load times. At best, it's mediocre. And we must add the FPS and resolution problems that we have already advanced before.

It is true that the quality of the image can be improved slightly if we deactivate the effects of grain, depth of field or chromatic aberration, but it is not a "jump" but rather a trick to try to play in the best possible conditions.

What is conserved is an excellent sound section thanks to a brilliant Spanish dubbing of thousands of lines of dialogue, and a good musical section, with licensed songs on radio stations that we can tune in when we drive any vehicle, in addition to the songs environmental

The result is an irregular title (failed if we take expectations into account), which is enjoyed in some moments and that in others turns into a disaster due to the accumulation of technical errors.

    Assessment

The current console version (PS4 and Xbox One) of Cyberpunk 2077 has so many optimization problems these days that it hardly even looks like the same game. The experience of this promising RPG is ruined by numerous "glitches" and especially by the low and unstable frame rate.

    Best

It preserves a great plot, characters and artistic direction with which Night City is built. It has the potential to become the promised game.

    Worst

It has come out "half cooked" on consoles, with numerous bugs, errors that take us out of the game, and frame drops that affect the experience.
