Information in the museum
New Leaf
The house centipede has very long legs that make it look quite intimidating. However, its sting is no more painful than that of a bee or a mosquito. If a predator grabs one of its legs, the centipede lets go of it and takes the opportunity to flee. The leg keeps moving on its own for a while, so it's a good distraction system.

Extra information
Native to the Mediterranean region, the house centipede has spread to other parts of the world, where it can live in human homes. It is an insectivore; kills and eats other arthropods, such as insects and arachnids. Outdoors, house centipedes prefer to live in cool, humid places. Most live outside, mainly under large rocks, piles of wood, and especially in compost piles. Inside the home, these centipedes are found almost anywhere in the house. They are most often found in basements, bathrooms, and toilets, which tend to be damp, but can also be found in drier places like offices, bedrooms, and dining rooms. They are most likely to find them in spring, when they come out because the weather warms up, and in fall, when cold weather forces them to seek refuge in human habitats.
