Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage- is the ninth game in the Kingdom Hearts saga. It was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 system as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. The story is an epilogue to Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and a prologue to Kingdom Hearts III, based on Aqua's journey through the Kingdom of Darkness. The game is developed with Unreal Engine 4, the game being a kind of technical demo intended to give players an idea of ​​what Kingdom Hearts III will bring. The game is roughly the size of a single Kingdom Hearts III world.

Gameplay

As the predecessor of Kingdom Hearts III, 0.2 returns to the format of Kingdom Hearts II, omitting the Command Menu and its respective game mechanics.

Something new that 0.2 introduces are the Situation Commands, a successor system to the Reaction Commands that incorporates elements from the Birth by Sleep Command Bar.

0.2 immediately follows up with the secret scene from Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, where Riku, Kairi, and King Mickey have a conversation with Yen Sid in the Tower of Mysteries. Yen Sid explains that in order to face Xehanort, they will have to gather the Seven Guardians of Light, three of whom had a terrible fate a decade ago. At Yen Sid's request, Mickey tells Riku and Kairi about the time he met Aqua in the Realm of Darkness.

The story begins immediately from the Secret Secret Episode of Birth by Sleep Final Mix, with discovering the Castle of Dreams in the Kingdom of Darkness. Sensing something suspicious, Aqua hurries her way to the castle evading Heartless attacks along the way. However, as he approached the castle, the castle's clock ticked rapidly, causing the path to collapse. Aqua enters the nearby town to find 5 gears that will turn the clock back to its original time and thus restore the path. As she finds these gears, flashbacks come to Aqua's mind from when she was in the Realm of Light. After restoring the path to the castle, Aqua sets off towards it but is confronted by a swarm of Shadows which gather to form a Cursed Tower, which is defeated by Aqua. Upon entering the castle, Aqua sees someone who appears to be Terra, but as she tries to get closer, the apparition fades into particles of light.

Continuing beyond the castle, Aqua finds herself in what remains of the Dwarf Forest, with only the single coffin in front of her. Approaching the coffin, Aqua sees Ventus inside it, to which Aqua desperately calls out to him, but, as with Terra, Ventus vanishes, leaving Aqua alone. When this happens, Aqua sees a mirror near her, but when she approaches the mirror, Aqua's reflection grabs her arm and pulls her, causing Aqua to enter the mirror, taking her to the Inner World. Discovering that the way back is blocked, Aqua heads to the central chamber where she is surrounded by three mirrors that seem to provoke her before flying off to the central chamber. Realizing that those three mirrors could be some kind of clue, Aqua begins to investigate these mirrors while being tormented by her own doubts. Upon finding the first mirror, Aqua's reflection on it comes to life and confronts Aqua. After the battle, where Aqua is victorious, Aqua proceeds to search for her other two reflexes and defeat them. After destroying the two missing reflexes, the way out opens again but Aqua realizes what her reflexes were telling her, as it turns out that her reflexes were actually manifestations of her own doubts that torment her, and that he is beginning to let darkness enter his heart. Regardless, Aqua exits through the newly opened exit.

Upon exiting the mirror, Aqua ends up in the remains of the Enchanted Kingdom, where she again sees appearances of Terra and Ventus. Declaring her intention to find them, Aqua goes in search of the illusions through the forest. Leaving this, Aqua comes to a long path stalked by numerous Dark Sides, which appear to be feeding a large orb of darkness in the sky. Aqua fights and defeats the Dark Side that was protecting the orb, causing the orb to vanish.

Aqua finally manages to reach the illusions of Terra and Ventus; to which she is surprised to see that Terra's illusion responds to her call. Terra reveals that he is unable to see anything in the Realm of Darkness and that he and Ventus are just illusions created by Aqua. Terra explains to Aqua that she no longer has control over her body, but as Aqua ponders Ventus' coma, Xehanort suddenly takes control over Terra and almost manages to make Aqua tell Ventus's location in Castle Oblivion. Before Aqua said so, Terra reappears and grabs Terra-Xehanort from behind, restricting his movements and summoning chains around him. Behind Aqua and Ven, a black portal appears and a hand from a Dark Side grabs and pulls Aqua and Ven into the portal.

Inside the portal, Aqua slowly descends into the darkness. When he drops his Always Together, Mickey appears and rescues Aqua and returns his Always Together. When the two are on dry land, Mickey explains to Aqua that it has been 10 years since they last saw each other and that he entered the Kingdom of Darkness to seal Kingdom Hearts together with Sora. Mickey explains that he managed to find Aqua thanks to his Siemprejuntos which emitted a "warm and familiar light". After fighting another Cursed Tower, Aqua and Mickey decide to stay and continue together. 

Continuing the journey, Mickey and Aqua arrive at the Destiny Islands which has been absorbed by the End of the World. Aqua recognizes the place as that was where she met Sora and Riku, and where Terra gave Riku the power of the Keyblade. Mickey deduces that this must mean that they are near the Keyblade of the Realm of Darkness, so they approach the Secret Place. But when they were about to enter, the Cursed Tower, now in Hell Wave form, returns and confronts Mickey and Aqua. Upon defeating him, Aqua and Mickey enter the Secret Place and find the wooden door inside, which they open and find the Chain of Kingdom D. Moments later, the Destiny Islands disappear leaving them in the Kingdom of Darkness.  

In the distance, Mickey sees the door to Kingdom Hearts, and Riku trying to close it. Before he could get close, Mickey is attacked by the Inferno Wave, ripping him off his clothes. Aqua decides to buy time by facing the Inferno Wave, but it grabs her and drags her to the Destiny Islands. Mickey then leaves to close Kingdom Hearts with Sora and Riku, while Aqua faces the Inferno Wave.    

Aqua is then seen lying on the shore of the beach, watching the night sky. While looking at the stars, Aqua sees drops of light raining down from the night, indicating that Kingdom Hearts has been sealed and that the Destiny Islands are being restored. Unable to leave the Realm of Darkness, Aqua falls from the disintegrating shoreline, slowly descending into darkness once more.    

In the next scene, Aqua approaches Ansem the Wise.
