I've got my eye on you, bucko!
    ― Picture quote, Wild World

Roscoe (シュバルツ, Shubarutsu?, Schwartz) is a cranky horse villager in the Animal Crossing series. He is also the only horse with a cranky personality. His initial phrase, "nay", is a reference to his species, as the sound a horse makes is ”neigh”. Since “nay” is also another way to say “no”, it may refer to his cranky personality. He first appears in Animal Forest e+, as an exclusive, and subsequently in Wild World and City Folk. Roscoe also shares his name with the award winning jockey, Roscoe Goose. His Japanese name, Schwartz, means 'black' in German, reflecting the color of Roscoe's body. He has the music hobby.

    Roscoe in Animal Forest e+

Roscoe is a black horse with a dark blue-gray mane. His tail is tipped with the same shade of blue-gray. His wide eyes are red with small black pupils, and are half-lidded in such a way that they could appear tired or angry in his default expression. The insides of his ears are purple. When he narrows his eyes, their scleras turn yellow. His muzzle and hooves are a dark, slightly brownish gray. He initially wears the Checkered Tee in Animal Forest e+ and City Folk. In New Horizons, his initial outfit is a black Biker Jacket.

    Personality

Below is a brief description of the cranky personality. For more information, click here.

Cranky villagers will usually appear in a grouchy or agitated mood and are more difficult to befriend than most other villager types. When talking to the player, cranky villagers tend to become angry if the player disagrees with them or refuses to do a favor. Like all cranky villagers, Roscoe will be invested in his hobby and will often challenge the player to various competitions. He will easily get along with jock, snooty and other cranky villagers, and occasionally lazy and normal villagers as well. However, he will find it hard to socialize with peppy villagers, as they will seem overstimulated or immature. Roscoe will also enjoy spreading rumors about other villagers.

    House

In Animal Forest e+, Roscoe’s house is identical to Rolf’s, except for the wallpaper and the flooring. K.K. Dirge is played on a Gold Stereo with two Bowtoids.

In Wild World and City Folk, Roscoe's house has a modern theme, featuring many items from the Modern Series. He also has two chess pieces in his room - the white knight and black knight. Knights in chess are represented by horses, a reflection of his species. He also has a baby bear, which, to some, seems out of character for a cranky villager. He has a plant, a petrol thing, a modern lamp and modern sofa, a white chess piece, and a candle. If he has a stereo, it will play K.K. Dirge.

In New Leaf, Roscoe's house is furnished mostly with items from the Sleek series, along with a weeping fig plant and a metal guitar with an amp.

In New Horizons, Roscoe has black furniture from various furniture series and sets. From the Rattan set, he owns the rattan bed, rattan low table, rattan table lamp, and a rattan end table with a throwback skull radio on top of it. He also has a double sofa, iron hanger stand, skull doorplate, DIY workbench, and an electric guitar propped up against an amp. He plays K.K. D&B on his portable record player. For wallpaper, he uses the black-crown wall, and for flooring, he uses the monochromatic tile flooring.

    Trivia

    • Roscoe’s theme is heavily influenced by chess. Aside from being a black horse himself (resembling the black knight chess piece), his pre-New Horizons shirt has a black and white checkered design pattern, which is the same pattern that a chess board has. His house interiors also have many pieces of furniture that reflect this same pattern, such as the Modern furniture, his flooring, and chess piece furniture items themselves. This goes along with the idea of Colton being the "white knight" to his "black knight".
    • When Roscoe makes an angry reaction, the whites of his eyes turn yellow.
