The Seven Details That Make Apex Legends A Different Battle Royale Experience (And My Favorite BR, By The Way)

A week after its launch, and after having spent about 20 hours of play, I can safely say that Apex Legends it has become my favorite battle royale. I will continue to play Fortnite, which in turn seems much more interesting and fun than PUBG, but right now the Respawn title is taking all my attention and playing time.

The studio responsible for the excellent saga Titanfall, whose second installment was for me the new definition of modern FPS and one of the most interesting games in the genre, has managed to turn the universe of the titans to create something truly unique. A title that has managed to combine the best of battle royale and hero shooter to surprise us all.

The Seven Details That Make Apex Legends A Different Battle Royale Experience (And My Favorite BR, By The Way) Stop staining in Apex Legens is easy if you follow these tips

These are the seven details why Apex Legends It is my favorite battle royale and they make it a different experience within the genre.

His amazing system of contextual communication between characters

One of the things that have blown my mind in Apex Legends it is the very complete communication system that Respawn has created for the characters. It is the first battle royale in which you can make yourself understand and at the same time understand the rest of your team in a clear and concise way without using a microphone or resorting to strange movements that the other has to decipher.

With a simple button I can mark an object to make its position known and make my character say out loud and naturally not only what it is, but how rare it is. Considering that there are many weapons and objects of all kinds scattered around the map, almost all with various levels of rarity by color (white, blue, purple and yellow), it is really amazing to see that there are voice recordings for each of them. … Multiplied by the eight characters it offers Apex Legends right now.

Not only that: the same button is used to mark a point on the map, point out detected enemies and even open a wheel to refine what you really want to say. It also works within the inventory: point to the ammunition of one of your weapons, for example, and you will see how your character asks with his own voice for the type of ammunition you need. Everything in a simple and intuitive way.

Even playing with friends and using a microphone, the most useful and quick is to mark everything: destinations, weapons, shields, objects, whatever. Everything is understood much faster and better in this way than if you only have to explain it out loud. And of course, the combination of both systems makes you feel little less than a superhero.

Apex Legends has heroes with abilities

And speaking of heroes: another great success of Apex Legends is the introduction of a series of characters, here known as legends, instead of having a generic one whose design can only vary with skins. In fact, the interesting thing is that each legend has its own abilities in true hero shooter style. Specifically, a passive ability, another normal and a super that, whether it is offensive or defensive, can turn a confrontation around.

This would be enough to provide playable variety, but at Respawn they have wanted to go further and have given each of these legends their own personality and voice. There are serial characters like Bloodhound o Caustic, but also vacilones like Bangalore or downright cocky and decidedly funny like The Mirage,.

Each legend also has its own skins, but also phrases, poses for the flags (more on this later), badges and even different movements for eliminations. Everything necessary to put on the table a lot of characters that are certainly seen by the player as true champions capable of intimidating anyone.

    Action at full speed

One of the hallmarks of the Titanfall It is the great speed of their action, with characters that move like lightning and can perform double jumps and even run up the walls. On Apex Legends There are no wallruns or jetpacks to power the jumps, but Respawn has made the action go equally at full speed. There isn't much room here for campers or hide and seek: the game invites you to be fast and deadly.

On the other hand there very smart design decisions which help mitigate the lack of wallruns and double jumps, like the portal you can create Wraith and that connects two points on the map separated by a good handful of meters, the zip line that you can place Pathfinder to reach high or distant areas very quickly or the red balloons that are scattered on the map and that, when used, are launched again from the sky.

Once dead you have the possibility to return to combat

Apex Legends It has a curious and wonderfully designed respawn system thanks to which we will have the opportunity to return to the battlefield once killed. The other similar case that I can think of is the one that integrates Realm Royale, where you can revive a partner in a forge if you have enough shards, but the truth is that Apex is infinitely better.

Here, if a partner fails to revive you while you bleed out, you die and drop a box in which all the equipment you were carrying is stored, plus a kind of card that will be available for collection for 80 seconds. If a teammate manages to collect the card, they can take it to a recovery beacon to insert it and bring you back to the battlefield like this. You will return in a ship, in a big way, although totally devoid of equipment. If you reach the box you left when you died and no one has touched anything, you can get everything back. Otherwise you will have to look for new weapons and equipment.

This system makes for truly epic situations. I have managed to eliminate the three members of an entire team that had killed my two companions and then collect their cards, go to the nearest beacon (which in this case was outside the safe zone), revive them and end up winning the game on the roof of a building with my entire squad.

When you're dead, on the other hand, you can press a button to tell your teammates the exact location of your box and then, once they've recovered it, point them to the nearest beacon as well. Really at Respawn they have thought of everything down to the last detail.

The figure of the Grim Reaper, the champions and the squads to be eliminated

There is another aspect that makes different Apex Legends of any other battle royale: the figure of the Grim reaper and the existence of a specific enemy squad to fear / kill. Killing the Grim Reaper, who is the player with the most deaths during the game, gives extra experience points.

On the other hand, when a game starts, the system reviews the statistics of each of the 60 players and highlights the one who did the best in their previous game. He is the champion and together with his squad will be the main legends to eliminate.

Another cool thing is that each player can unlock poses and flags, which are the representations we see of them before and during games.

    The Jumpmaster figure

If memory serves me correctly, there is no other battle royale in which the figure of the Jumpmaster. In Apex Legends, each player does not jump separately at the beginning of a game, but one of the three members of the squad chooses when and where to jump and the other two automatically accompany him to each side. Apex is intended to be played as a team, so it makes sense to land together and work side by side pointing out objects, weapons, enemies and cooperating at all times. Of course, once in free fall, anyone can take off from the peloton to fine-tune their own landing if they wish.

Having said that, it should be noted that although the Jumpmaster has the last word, the rest of the players in the platoon can suggest landing zones. In fact, there is even a solo drop button regardless of what the Jumpmaster decides, but the truth is that it is a very bad idea to go free in this game.

There is one last twist: the Jumpmaster can delegate his duties so that it is another player who takes the reins. It is no longer just that someone suggests a landing point and the Jumpmaster accepts it, it is giving control to another to decide not only the area in which to land but the moment in which to jump and the speed of entry. If we go into detail, the reality is that everything is quite tactical and works wonderfully.

    Exemplary inventory and asset management

Following the philosophy of playing fast and maximizing our time in Apex Legends, the game is very smart when it comes to managing everything related to objects, weapons and their accessories.

If you find a scope for a weapon and carry that weapon, it allows you to directly attach the scope. If you have ammunition in your inventory from a weapon that you do not carry, it is crossed out so you know that you can do without it. If you find an object of rarity greater than the one you have equipped, such as body armor, it will replace it when you pick it up; if it is of lesser rarity, it will notify you of it so that you do not replace it by mistake. If you find a weapon and have several accessories compatible with it in your inventory, they will be automatically placed when you pick it up. And so everything.

This makes any pause in action, either because you are recording a box from a downed enemy, or because you have opened your inventory, last the shortest time possible and cause you the least number of problems. Everything is perfectly understood and works fast, with which in a few seconds you can equip yourself with the best and keep moving forward.

For now I can only applaud Respawn for the care with which he has designed every aspect of Apex Legends. And this is just beginning, I'm sure we can expect great things from the game in the near future.
