White turnip
Each filtering bag white turnips or simply turnips, are a unique type of flora present in every Animal Crossing game to date. These are sold by Juana (DnM - NL) or Juliana (NH onwards) every Sunday, before 12:00, the turnips can multiply or degrade their value quickly from Monday to Saturday, and must be sold before next Sunday to prevent them from spoiling. The player cannot grow their own turnips, but red turnips can be farmed in Wild World and City Folk.
Turnips automatically spoil at 6:00 AM (5:00 AM on New Horizons) Sunday after they are purchased, and then they are worthless. Changing the time and date of the game will also cause them to crash, hence Juana's warning that turnips "are very sensitive to the paradoxes of time." However, there are known bugs and manipulations in Animal Crossing series that prevent turnips from rotting for long periods of time, for example by changing time backwards, although this does not work as of New Leaf.
Spoiled turnips can be placed on the ground to attract ants, roaches (NGC), and flies, so spoiled turnips do have a use. However, like other "junk" items, when sold to Paca, it will charge a fee to remove them of 400 berries (sometimes 500 berries).

Buy and sell
Buy
Turnips are bought from Juana (DnM - NL) or Juliana (NH onwards), a character who wanders through the town on Sunday morning. Juana / Juliana will sell turnips at a random sale price per week, in the range of 90 to 110 berries per turnip. Unlike red turnips, white turnips can be purchased in infinite quantities.
For sale
White turnips are sold through the turnip market, a parody on the real-life bag game. In most games, Tom Nook is the middle man for the turnip market, but in New Leaf he is replaced by Paca, and in New Horizons they are replaced by Tendo and Nendo.
On Sundays you cannot sell turnips recently, only from Monday to Saturday depending on the price that the value handles. As with the stock market in real life, the market purchase price for turnips fluctuates. The price changes twice a day, first at midnight and again at noon.
Turnip selling prices range from a low of 15 berries to a high of 400 to 800 berries, but the most common is less than 200 and more than 50. The most extreme prices can more than quadruple the player's investment, and higher prices can quickly turn several million berries in a short time.
Although the prices are random, there is a tendency for them to rise from Monday to Wednesday and then fall from Thursday to Saturday.
New Leaf Sales
In the turnip market it can be predicted in some way, since it follows four different patterns. The New Leaf patterns are as follows.
- Random - This pattern is completely random, with values generally ranging from 50 to 200 Berries. It is easy to spot this pattern, as it is very different from the other three types. However, it is unlikely that you will make a big profit with this pattern, so it is advisable to sell at the first or second price of more than 110 Berries.
- Decreasing: this pattern presents values that decrease little by little every day. There are no increases at all and therefore it is impossible to make a profit. The other two patterns (which are not random) are similar to this and therefore it can be difficult to identify whether you have this pattern or not. If prices do not increase on Thursday afternoon, you are guaranteed to have this pattern.
- Large Gain - This pattern is similar to the decreasing pattern but features a sequence of 5 consecutive numbers somewhere between Monday morning and Saturday afternoon. There will be 3 increases followed by 2 small decreases, the third value being the highest. Each value increases each time by a large amount. To make a profit, sell on the 3rd raise. If you simply miss it, then sell immediately as you will continue to make a profit, even if it is a smaller one.
- Small Gain - This pattern is also similar to the decreasing pattern with its own sequence of 5 consecutive numbers. There will be 4 increases followed by 1 small decrease, the 4th value being the highest. Unlike the big win pattern, each value increases a small amount at a time from 1 to 30 Berries. To make a profit, sell on the fourth increase. Again, if you just miss the opportunity, then sell immediately.
Tricks
Some known turnip tricks are listed below. These tricks address the results of time travel or not watering the turnips.
Consequences of time travel
Joan will not sell turnips if the player recently changed the game time, explaining that the turnips are out of stock. However, changing the console time directly rather than within the game can avoid this penalty.
As for Wild World and City Folk, if the player changes the time on the console, Juana will arrive in Town with both types of turnips exhausted, a consequence of trying to exploit time travel. One solution for this is to change the console time. Changing the console time changes the game time, but not the other way around, so there are no consequences.
Table error
In Wild World, placing turnips on a table inside the player's house can prevent them from rotting. To do this, the player must first drop a tool in front of the table, then drop the turnip that must fall on the table. If the table trick is tried, the turnips won't spoil.
Visit other towns
In Animal Crossing, if the player has turnips in his pocket and travels by train to a town with clock settings earlier than the Sunday most recent than the traveling player's Town, the turnips will spoil when they reach their destination.
In New Leaf this no longer happens. This allows potentially an infinite profit, since two people (or one person with two systems) can, in theory, have a game with Juana currently in Town and another with a high price of turnips in Recycling Equipment (ideally more than 500) , and travel between the two without any consequence.
In New Horizons, you can travel from one island to another to see the price of turnips, which depends on each of the small-town islands they have seen. As long as it's Sunday morning.
Curiosities
- In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer he appears as a piece of furniture and is unlocked with Charo.
- In New Horizons, the player can eat up to ten turnips at a time to maximize stamina.
