The fossils are objects appear under an icon of a blue stone with drawings of a shell (probably inspired by an ammonite), a small star and a small circle. This is how they are when they are not identified, but by talking to Socrates in the "I have a fossil" option or in the "Donation" option they can be identified. Then the icon will change to a skull of a dinosaur, similar to that of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, with some crossed bones. Contrary to what it may seem, once identified fossils do not have to be parts of dinosaurs, since there are also so-called Independent or one-piece that correspond to things that are also fossilized, but not dinosaurs, such as the Peking Man, Ammonite or Amber (see full list of independents below)
Fossils constitute a very important part of the museum, that of their exhibition. Socrates, the museum manager, loves them. In fact, paleontology is a great strength that it has.
What to do with the fossils? If you are new to this, it is normal to ask. There are two very clear options on what to do with them:
- Donate them to the Museum
- Make Socrates identify them for you using the option "I have a fossil" and sell them, because if you sell them without identifying them, they will not pay you anything for them. On the other hand, if they are already identified, the price will be quite high.
- There is a third option, and that is that when a neighbor asks you for a fossil (especially in AC: CF, which also happens to be a very specific type of fossil), give it to him through a third option that will appear when you talk to him. This helps the friendship with him to be greater.
- In Animal Crossing: New Leaf you can bring a complete collection to Al in Recycling Gear who will turn it into a model of the complete fossil.

Get the fossils
The fossils are obtained by digging them up with the shovel when you see a crack in the ground in the shape of a star (it is also possible that a gyroid or a trap appears). When you unearth it you will see that it is circular in shape, dark blue in color and with a spiral and two white stars, because it is still unknown what fossil it is.
List of fossils
Those entered in the respective game are highlighted in bold. To see the parts of each species go to the article of the fossil in question.

The movie
In the film when Ai goes to the museum he is in a dark room, when Socrates turns on the light it turns out that it is the room of fossils and in a cave Ai, Yu, Kaiman, Minina and Rita find the seismosaurus, the largest known dinosaur .
Types of fossils
Fossils are parts of dinosaurs (they can be 2, 3 or 4 for each), although there are also other independent ones that consist of a single piece (such as ammonites). The ones with a * in front of them are other additions in Animal Crossing: City Folk / Let's go to the city.

Curiosities
- In Animal Crossing (GameCube), Socrates did not have the title of decryptor of fossils, if you wanted to have the deciphered fossil, you had to send it by letter to the museum, the next day a letter would arrive telling you what fossil it was and you the deciphered fossil arrived. In the following titles it already appears with the title and you can go directly to the museum to identify it.
