Yes, that's right: most likely, the problem you are having can be solved by putting in place some small tricks and without going to buy new devices. The solution lies in knowing how to correctly use the tools at your disposal and in configuring your devices in the best possible way.

The instructions below will lead you straight to your goal and I can assure you that by following them you will be able to significantly improve the performance of Fortnite on your PS4. Preliminary information

Lag in online video games (but not only) is often linked to the quality of the Internet connection. There are two main parameters to consider download speed e latency (ping). In particular, this last parameter indicates the time required for your computer (in this case the console) to send a command to the remote servers and receive a response. In the worst cases, that is, when the ping (which is measured in milliseconds) is very high, it can take a few seconds before the game character responds to commands.
In addition to this, in the specific case of Fortnite, there are graphic settings that can improve the fluidity of the game, but we are talking about features that are often already activated by default or have rather marginal effects, so try to focus on the quality of the connection.
Having made these necessary clarifications, let's take action: below you will find all the details of the case to solve your problem with Fortnite (and other online games).
Improve the connection quality
As mentioned above, the connection quality is the main factor that determines the lag on Fortnite. For this reason, I will shortly explain what tools are at your disposal to improve the situation.
Check the quality of the connection
The first thing to do to understand the problem is obviously to check the Internet connection quality, analyzing data related to download speed and latency (ping).
My advice is to perform a speed test directly from the PlayStation 4. To do this, go to the toolbar top and press the button X of the pad its Settings (the gear icon). After that, select the item first Network and later that Configure Internet Connection.
At this point, choose if your network is wireless by pressing on the item Use Wi-Fi, or via cable, by selecting Use a network (LAN) cable. In case you are using a Wi-Fi network, you may be prompted to enter the access key, if this is your first time accessing it. That said, it is advisable to use a wired connection to make the most of the connection and not run into problems typical of Wi-Fi networks, such as interference or lack of signal.
Now you just have to press on the item Check Internet Connection and wait for the console to carry out all the necessary tests. The data you are interested in are Connection speed (download) e NAT type, but I will talk about the latter in detail later.
For now, let's focus on download speed. Well, to have a satisfying gaming experience, it is advisable to have a connection that exceeds 6 Mbps. Usually a 7 Mega ADSL is enough to be able to play quietly. However, there is also another important factor that affects the quality of the gaming experience offered by Fortnite: the ping.
As mentioned above, the ping indicates the data transmission time from one point to another, in this case from the PlayStation 4 to the Fortnite server, and is expressed in milliseconds (ms).
To analyze this data, go to the main screen of the Battle Royale Fortnite, press the button Options controller and select the item Settings. At this point, press the button R1 of the controller, to go to the tab with theicona dell'ingranaggio, and press the button R2 of pad. You just have to activate the option Actual debug statistics and press the button triangle controller to apply the changes.
Now, start a game of Fortnite and carefully analyze the data and the graph that will appear in the upper left: if your connection is not the best, you will see aWi-Fi icon with a yellow X which will tell you that there may be lag problems. In particular, this will happen when the ping exceeds the recommended value of 30ms / 40ms or there will be many packets lost (you can check the percentage by looking at the graph or the item Packet Loss).
In short, now you have all the tools to understand what the problem is, while below you can find some possible remedies to the situation.
Set up the NAT
In some cases, the connection may meet the requirements of the game, but Fortnite games may still have lags, or there may be difficulties connecting to the servers. In cases like these, you are almost always faced with a problem NAT (Network address translation).
There are three types of NAT: NAT 1, NAT 2 e NAT 3. The first is to indicate that the NAT is open and therefore completely free to accommodate the connections of online games, but it is particularly difficult to obtain (you have to connect the PS4 directly to the modem and, in any case, not all operators allow it). The NAT 2, which is also what is usually used by gamers, represents a moderate situation, where the network settings are optimal for online play but the opening of the NAT is limited to some specific ports. The NAT3 it is the problematic one, as it represents a closed situation, which prevents online games from communicating properly with the network.
If you don't know what type of NAT is currently associated with your connection, I invite you to run the network test I explained in the chapter on how to check the connection quality. If, as likely, you have a Type 3 NAT, proceed to read and implement the instructions below.
The first thing you need to do is set a static IP on the PS4. Go, then, to the toolbar top and press the button X of the controller above theicona dell'ingranaggio (Settings). Once this is done, select the item Networkwho quills Configure Internet Connection and, choose whether to use a network Wi-Fi or a wired (I always recommend the wired), then select the item custom. If you have decided to use a wireless network, you will be prompted for the access key (in case it has not already been saved on the console).
When asked to set the IP address, select the item Manual. Now, type a IP address based on the router address: for example, if the router has address 192.168.1.1, that of the PlayStation 4 will have to follow the pattern 192.168.1.xx, where instead of the 'x' there are some digits of your choice (eg. 192.168.1.14). In the field Subnet mask insert 255.255.255.0 (this is the default, but it may vary depending on the network used), in Default gateway enter the router address (eg. 192.168.1.1) and in Primary DNS re-type the router address. Leave the field blank Secondary DNS. Once this is done, hit the Next button, set the value MTU su Automatic and choose to do not use proxy server.
Now, you have to proceed to open the router ports used by Fortnite, namely: 80 TCP, 443 TCP, 3478 TCP, 3479 TCP, 3480 TCP, 3478 UDP e 3479 UDP. For example, considering a D-Link router, but this varies from model to model, you just need to open the browser, connect to therouter address (usually it is 192.168.1.1 o 192.168.0.1), to insert username e Password e premere sul pulsating Log in. After that, you need to press on the item Features at the top and select the option relating toport forwarding.
Then press the button Add rules, complete the field Your name with a description (eg. "Port Fortnite"), type theIP locale of the PlayStation 4 (the one you set earlier), enter the ports TCP e UDP that I indicated to you earlier and press the button To apply. Repeat for all doors. Once all the doors are open, press the button Save, for the changes to take effect.

At this point, by running the test described in the chapter on how to check the connection quality again, you should see that the NAT has become type 2. If this does not happen, it means that something went wrong during the procedure. The problem may be that the router address is not the default one, but for more details I recommend that you consult my tutorial on how to open ports for the PS4.
Set the DNS
Another aspect that could significantly improve the quality of the connection is that related to Domain Name System (DNS). If you do not know, the DNS servers are the ones that "translate" the addresses we type in browsers (eg.) Into the numerical IP addresses of the resources to be reached (ie their real addresses on the Internet). We can consider them as a sort of telephone directory and, as easily understood, the faster they are the better.
My advice is to try using international DNS servers from some providers that are known for their speed, such as Google, OpenDNS e CloudFlare.
To do this, just follow the procedure described in the chapter on how to set up the NAT and when you are asked to complete the fields Primary DNS e Secondary DNS, enter the values respectively 8.8.8.8 e 8.8.8.4 (Google DNS). If, on the other hand, you want to use OpenDNS DNS, type 208.67.222.222 e 208.67.220.220, while for Cloudflare's DNS you have to set the values 1.1.1.1 e 1.0.0.1.
Once this is done, try running the test again described in the chapter on how to check the connection quality and see if the values have improved.
Set up the QoS
Il QoS (Quality of Service) is a tool that allows you to optimize the network by giving priority to certain packets and thus allowing the console to have more bandwidth than other devices. This possibility is only supported by some routers.
Yes, it is also a feature that changes from device to device, so I won't be able to be very precise in my indications. In any case, in general, all you have to do is access the router management panel (as I explained to you before and as described in my guide on how to access the router), search and enable the voice QoS, among those available.
For example, when looking at a D-Link router, you have to press on the item Features present at the top, in the management panel, and select the item QoS engine. At this point, you have to drag theicon linked to the IP address of the PS4 (the one you set earlier) in the box Highest priority) e premere sul pulsating Save, to apply the changes.
In this way, the packages destined for the PlayStation 4, and consequently for Fortnite, will have priority over the others and you should therefore see a good improvement in the quality of the connection, especially if your network has several devices connected.
Other useful tips
In addition to those described above, there are also some tricks, more "trivial" but no less effective, which often some users forget to implement.
I am referring in particular to the use of a wired connection, able to offer better power and stability than Wi-Fi networks which, as known, are subject to interference and signal problems.
If your router is very far from the PS4, you can still resort to the use of Ethernet cables through the Powerline adapters, accessories capable of "passing" the connection through the electrical network: I talked about it in more detail in the tutorial that I just linked to you.
If you really can't do without the Wi-Fi network, I recommend you move the router closer to the console (in order to improve the wireless coverage) and, in case of problems, to change the radio channel of the wireless network, to avoid interference.
Adjust the Fortnite settings
In case you have not yet managed to "remove" the lag found on Fortnite for PlayStation 4, you could probably be one of those users who notice the difference until the last FPS. Don't worry: there is a solution to this problem as well.
In fact, Fortnite for PlayStation 4 implements some settings that allow you to make the gameplay a little more fluid. To activate them, go to the main menu of the mode Battle Royale, press the button Options controller and select the item Settings give the menu check if you press.
At this point, check that the Matchmaking region sia impostat his Car (the game will also give you a ping estimate in ms) and that option Registra replay is set to No. Another aspect that could help you make the game smoother is setting the squashed view by reducing the resolution of the console.
