Realm Chain, the first Keyblade in the series, is the true form of Sora's Keyblade.

La Key Sword (Keyblade in English, Key blade, Kīburēdo in Japanese), is a mysterious weapon and one of the most important elements of the Kingdom Hearts saga, being carried by most of its protagonists. The Keyblade is a major part in the battle between Light and Darkness.

There are many different types, which differ from each other by shape, size, their different fighting qualities and powers, which can vary depending on the keychain that has been assigned to the key, and that are obtained as you advance in the game. The best known and most representative Keyblade is the Kingdom Chain, Sora's initial Keyblade and the one worn by default in most games.

According to an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the original weapon that was thought of during development was actually a chainsaw-like weapon, which would already feature a keychain. This idea was discarded in favor of the Keyblade.

    Origins

As mentioned in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, the Keyblades originated trying to recreate the Keyblade χ, therefore, they are "copies" adapted to it according to its appearance. A legend mentioned in Kingdom Hearts claims that the wielder of the Keyblade can save the world, or bring chaos and destruction to the worlds.

While these legends may seem to contradict each other, it can be understood that the wielder of the Keyblade chooses how to use it, either for better or for worse. The Keyblade is known throughout the universe as a unique and powerful weapon. For example, in Atlantica, King Triton and Ursula had knowledge of the Keyblade and its powers. King Triton did not want Sora to seal the Lock because he thought that the Keyblade would plunge his world into chaos, while Ursula knew that it gives the bearer the possibility to travel the worlds.

One of the text fragments in the secret video for Kingdom Hearts II: "The Gathering", mentions a War of the Keyblades. Hundreds of Keyblades can be seen embedded in the ground during this video, as well as in the extended "Birth by Sleep" at the end of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.

It should be noted that none of these apparently abandoned Keyblades have keyrings, even though the importance of this detail is currently unknown as the origin of the Keyblades. Master Xehanort also stated that the thousands of Keyblades that remain are the ruins and ancient weapons of the Keyblade War.

    History

    Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep features eight people who can wield Keyblades: Ventus, Aqua, Terra, Master Eraqus, Mickey, Master Xehanort, Vanitas, and Yen Sid.

Near the end of the game, Master Xehanort explains to Terra, Aqua, and Ventus that the Keyblades in the Keyblade Necropolis are the forgotten keys of ancient Keyblades chosen after the Keyblade War in battle. of Light and Darkness.

Terra performs the Keyblade inheritance ceremony with Riku, passing him the ability to wield this weapon. Aqua also accidentally does this ceremony with Kairi.

    Kingdom Hearts

Sora first obtaining the Keyblade in the Destiny Islands.

When the worlds began to disappear, King Mickey realized that Kingdom Hearts was going to be opened, and he headed to the Kingdom of Darkness to find his Keyblade, with which he could seal the door. However, it was also necessary for someone to use a Light Realm Keyblade in conjunction with him, so he left a letter for Donald and Goofy, asking them to find the chosen wielder of that Keyblade and help him save the worlds.

When the Heartless invaded the Destiny Islands, Sora wanders the small island to save his friends, but finds that Kairi and Riku have been swallowed up by darkness. It is at this point that the Keyblade that Terra had promised to Riku appears on the island, but because Riku has allied himself with the darkness, the Keyblade falls into Sora's hands, and manifests as his.

When Sora first arrives in Pass City, he meets Leon, who later gives him shelter and a little explanation about the Keyblade and the Heartless. Yuffie and León want to take the Keyblade away from Sora, since it is the only way to "hide their heart", this is due to the fear that the heartless have of the Keyblade, and they will not stop until they take the heart of its bearer. .

In Atlantica, King Triton is enraged when he learns that Sora is the wielder of the Key and tells him that as a wielder he must not meddle in the affairs of other worlds and thus had violated the principle. King Triton thinks that the Keyblade and its wielder can only break the peace and lead to ruin.

Sora uses his Keyblade to seal the locks of the worlds he visits, but when he reaches Hollow Bastion, Riku reveals that the Keyblade was intended for him, and takes it back at a time when Sora's heart weakens. . However, Sora does not take long to face Riku, and the strength of his heart, greater than that of Riku's heart, allows him to wield the Keyblade again.

Confused and angry, Riku runs away and meets Ansem, who convinces Riku to give him his body in exchange for more power. This new "Dark Riku" invokes the People's Heart Keyblade, in order to unlock the final lock, but it remains incomplete due to Kairi's heart missing.

When Sora tracks down the Dark Riku and confronts him, Dark Riku reveals that Kairi's heart is within Sora. When Sora defeats Dark Riku, he uses his Keyblade on himself to free Kairi's heart, sealing the lock and restoring all the princesses' hearts at the cost of his body and soul.

Later, after defeating Ansem, Sora, Donald, and Goofy, they attempt to close the door to Kingdom Hearts, where King Mickey first appears with the Chain of Kingdom D, the Keyblade of the Kingdom of Darkness. With their help, as well as Riku's already normal, they close the door, freeing the worlds from falling into darkness.

    Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Marluxia planned to use Naminé to manipulate Sora through his memories and use the Keyblade against the rest of Organization XIII and seize power.

    Kingdom Hearts 358 / 2 Days

Both Roxas and Xion are used by the Organization to collect the hearts of the iconic Heartless with their Keyblades. Riku and Mickey also appear in various scenes with their Keyblades.

    Kingdom Hearts II

Sora, Riku, Kairi, Roxas, and King Mickey use the Keyblade throughout this game. Sora uses the Keyblade to open new routes to new worlds through the gates. While King Mickey comes out from time to time to help Sora; Riku receives his own Keyblade, shortly before meeting Sora and Kairi in the Nonexistent World: Kairi receives her sword from Riku.

Kairi makes use of the Keyblade only at the moment when a wave of the Heartless attacks in the castle of the Non-existent World.

    Kingdom Hearts coded

The digital Sora can use his digital version of the Kingdom Chain to remove the Bug Blocks and to seal the data locks. Her digital Keyblade is destroyed by Maleficent, but she later receives a new Keyblade. King Mickey explains that this Keyblade is closely connected to the power of the heart, which means that his Keyblade is authentic.

King Mickey also uses his Keyblade to defeat the Heartless attacking his castle.

    Key Sword Key Sword

    Lea's Keyblade

Master Yen Sid explains the most historical revelation of the Keyblade and its original purpose in this game. Originally, the Keyblade χ was the counterpart to Kingdom Hearts. However, a group appeared one day and brought the world to light, causing darkness to be born and engulf the universe. An epic battle was fought and as a result, the Keyblade χ split into seven fragments of pure light, which are the hearts of the seven Princesses of the Heart, and another thirteen fragments of Darkness. The Keyblades were originally created by those who intended to use darkness on the world, but some chose to use them to safeguard the light and protect the worlds.

Sora and Riku must undergo the Master's Title Exam in order to learn how to use the power of the Keyblade properly and become Keyblade Masters. At the end of the game, only Riku becomes a full-fledged Keyblade Master. Lea also gets her own Keyblade, and Kairi is invited by Master Yen Sid to learn how to wield the power of the Keyblade.

    Appearance

Most Keyblades have the same structure layout: the forearm, a handle, and a protrusion at the opposite end of the handle that resembles the teeth of a master key. Despite this, there are some that have a slightly modified structure similar to more current braces or with double rows of teeth (see Fenrir or Postrimería).

Most Keyblades also have their name based, usually on a world, a person, or a feeling, and this is also reflected in their appearance.

    Key Sword Key Sword

Sparkles and lights effect when summoning Distant Memories.

Each keychain has a unique animation for when the Keyblade is summoned. They usually symbolize a specific aspect of the Keyblade. For example, when Distant Memories are summoned, a dark aura and purple sparks are produced around the wearer's hands before the Keyblade appears. The effects that occur when the Keyblade hits something also change with keychains. For example, with the Fateful Encounter Keyblade a type of black and white crowns appear when a solid object is struck.

    Type

According to the Xehanort Reports there are four types of Keyblades: those of light, those of darkness, those of hearts and the Keyblades χ.

    • Lightsaber Keys: They are the Keyblades forged in the realm of light and those wielded by bearers. [1]
    • Keyblade of Darkness: They are the Keyblades that originate from the realm of darkness. King Mickey's Kingdom D Keyblade Chain is one of its kind. [1]
    • Hearts Keyblades: They are the Keys that originated after the Keyblade War, when the worlds were reorganized. These Keys can only be forged by gathering seven hearts of pure light in order to open the doors that lead to Kingdom Hearts. [1]
    • Keyblades X: They are the Keyblades that coexist by themselves with Kingdom Hearts itself. They are conceived when two very powerful forces oppose in a balanced way: a heart of pure light and one of pure darkness. [2]

    Powers

As the name suggests, in combat, Keyblades are used in a similar way to a sword. Although most do not possess a true cutting edge, Keyblades are still the most effective weapons for combat and have proven to be especially effective against the Heartless, Nobodies, Nescient, and Dreams. However, on the downside, the Heartless use the Keyblade as a claim, and therefore its wielders are at constant risk of being attacked at any moment.

Most Keyblade wielders are able to elongate their final attacks with the power of Light or Darkness. This has been seen in Sora's Arcane abilities; Roxas, Xion, and Riku's Limit Break in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Sora and Riku's Limit, Eternal Session, and in Terra and Aqua's command style.

The Keyblade's primary power, after all, is the ability to close or open the barriers that separate worlds, as well as "seal" the lock on a world, preventing the Heartless from reaching the world.

    Key Sword Key Sword

Sora sealing the lock on Hollow Bastion

heart of the world. Likewise, the Keyblade can also be used to lock or unlock any lock, allowing the wearer to access any type of closed environment, be it a locked room, a door or a chest. The Keyblade opens and closes the Locks by emitting a thin, bright beam of light. The bearers of this can usually simply touch the surface of a treasure chest and that will be enough to open it.

In addition to its basic powers, it is possible to modify the appearance of a Keyblade and its powers by attaching various keychains to it.

However, there are some Keyblades that do not have a keychain for unknown reasons. There are known cases of chosen ones who happen to have a Keyblade as a result of their heart becoming stronger, and finally, it manifests itself as a modification of their old weapon. A clear example can be seen when Riku's Soul Eater becomes Path to Dawn, or when Roxas's two Keyblades transform into Fiancee and Distant Memories.

The reason for these transformations is that probably a part of the true power and decision of a bearer and his heart is still asleep or tormented, in the case of Riku, for example, his Key did not manifest until he could not accept that in his heart there was darkness. Once achieved, Riku's heart was strong and in balance and calm with himself which caused his Soul Eater to change and manifest as the Path to Dawn Keyblade. Other examples of this change are Roxas, and more recently in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Lea, who has also obtained a Keyblade apparently with the modified form of her chakrams. It is likely that Axel (like Xemnas or Xehanort's Heartless), could not handle a Keyblade before because he did not have a heart of his own.

    Requirements to carry it

The Keyblade has a special power that only allows a chosen wielder to wield it. This becomes apparent when Sora gives his Keyblade to Jack Sparrow, which returns to Sora's hands. In the final battle with Xemnas, Sora was able to keep Riku's Keyblade, and the same goes for Riku with Sora's Keyblade. While there are many qualities that a wielder of the Keyblade must have, the only indispensable requirement is that they must have an exceptionally strong heart.

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep it is possible for a Keyblade master to choose a person as his successor if he has the main requirements that allow him to wield this weapon, as Terra chose Riku to be his successor. Kairi seems to have inherited the same ability when she accidentally touched Aqua's Keyblade.

Also mentioned in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is the possibility of obtaining a Keyblade by killing its original wielder, as Braig intended to obtain it by defeating Terra. This is also given to indicate when Sephiroth fights Sora in Kingdom Hearts II, wondering if the Keyblade would pass into his hands should he defeat its current wielder.

Aqua was going to choose Sora as her successor, but decided against it because Terra had already chosen Riku and did not want the two of them to fight for the weapon in the future, as had happened to her and Terra. However, it is clearly unknown why Sora has the ability to wield the Keyblade, a common theory is that he has inherited the ability from Ventus and that his heart was stronger than Riku's in the events of Kingdom Hearts.

    Grooving Key

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Terra, Ventus and Aqua have the ability to turn their Keyblades into vehicles that they use to travel to other worlds, in addition Terra like Latent Consciousness, is also able to metamorphose their original Keyblade (Telluria and Postrimería) in other weapons as demonstrated in the Artema Cannon Accurate Shot. In turn, Master Xehanort explains in the Xehanort Reports that he used in his own learning, these types of attacks and metamorphoses, and that is shown in Final Mix, in the fight against Noheart, in which said enemy also transforms the Key into multiple weapons (crossbow, clamp, leg among others) and also shows Xehanort's Furrowing Key in the shape of a jetpack with wings.

    Key Sword Key Sword

    Aqua in her Grooving Key.

Although only these 5 masters (if we count Latent Consciousness as well), have demonstrated this capacity for transformation, it is very likely that the technique is also capable of being learned by other wielders of the Keyblade, and it is very likely that Master Eraqus as well. had this ability since he trained and learned alongside Xehanort, as students of the same teacher. However, he never used it.

    Magic

Keyblades can control the art of magic, as seen when Sora uses his Keyblade to direct his magical attacks. This is not to say that magic cannot be performed by a wielder when not carrying the Keyblade, as seen when Sora is able to use magic with a wooden sword in Hollow Bastion. However, in Kingdom Hearts Re: coded, the Digital Sora does not use magic after Maleficent destroys his Keyblade.

    Double Sword

Wielders of the Keyblade are capable of allowing others to wield this second weapon, or give it to another wielder. When Roxas meets Riku at the Skyscraper of Memories, he throws his Distant Memories at Riku, staying with Fiancee. Riku takes it and uses it in battle. It also happens when Roxas and Sora fight in the Awakening. There Sora is able to wield Roxas's Keyblade and use it against him, albeit only temporarily.

However there are special cases that can use two Keyblades naturally. Said cases are Sora in the fusions (except in Wise Form) and Roxas.

Roxas was able to handle two Keyblades the moment Xion joined him, which makes Roxas manage to handle Xion's Keyblade and from there handle the two Keys, accessing the Promised and Distant Memories swords. In fact, these Keys get that shape due to two relevant facts: Fiancée refers to Roxas's promise of friendship towards Xion and Axel, and has a luminous and reassuring appearance for this reason, and Distant Memories, which has a dark and sinister aspect. , refers to Roxas' grief at the loss of Xion and his memories of her that slowly fade away.

    Keyblade Bearers

    Sora

The most prominent character in the series who uses a Keyblade is Sora, who has used it successfully in both main games. His ability to use and possess the Keyblade was an important plot point in the first game. He has used more keyrings than anyone else in the Kingdom Hearts series, the variations are created through keyrings placed on his original Keyblade, Kingdom Chain.

    King mickey

The king of Disney Castle and one of the current teachers. His Keyblade is known as "Realm Chain D". It has the same design as the Kingdom Chain, but its colors are reversed. In Kingdom Hearts coded and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep he uses the Star Scout, the Keyblade he used in his days as Yen Sid's apprentice.

    Riku

Sora's best friend wields the Path to Dawn Keyblade, though in Kingdom Hearts he briefly took possession of Sora's Keyblade. In Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, he used the Soul Eater as his primary weapon, until it became Path to Dawn when he accepted and faced the darkness of his heart.

In Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, he becomes Master of the Keyblade. During his exam, he changes keychain just like Sora, with Road to Dawn being his starting weapon.

    Roxas

Sora's Nobody and the thirteenth member of Organization XIII. Roxas also possesses the ability to wield the Keyblade, an ability Xemnas uses to his advantage to complete Kingdom Hearts. He gains the ability to wield two Keyblades because of having inside him Ventus's heart (which is the cause of the incorporeal being the same as him physically) and a part of Xion, who awakened Sora's Keyblade. These swords are Distant Memories and Fiancee.

It is possible that Roxas awakened his own Keyblade, since in the fight against Sora there are three Keyblades. This is reaffirmed in the appearance of Lea with a Keyblade, possibly being the disciple of Roxas and fighting for him in the War of the Keyblades.

    Terra, Aqua and Ventus

Three Keyblade wielders before Sora are Master Eraqus's apprentices, with Aqua being the only one to become a master. They share a common enemy: Master Xehanort, each of them suffering dire fates due to Xehanort himself at the end of the game: Terra is possessed by Master Xehanort and becomes the Xehanort who later becomes Sora's enemy; Ventus goes into a coma as his heart is damaged, after a victorious confrontation with his dark side, Vanitas; and Aqua finds herself trapped in the Realm of Darkness. The three of them are waiting for Sora to rescue them from their fates.

    Xehanort

The main antagonist of the entire saga. Like his original character, Master Xehanort, Xehanort is a Keyblade Master who plans to create the Keyblade χ to open Kingdom Hearts and thus unleash a new Keyblade War. To do this, he steals Terra's body by transferring his heart into the latter's body and becomes the new Xehanort, much younger and more agile, combined with the ability to wield Master Xehanort's Keyblade and the powers of Terra.

However, after the confrontations against Latent Consciousness and Aqua, he seems to lose the ability to wield the Keyblade along with his memories, except for his name.

However, it has recently been revealed that this is not the case, as in one of the Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance videos, Xehanort appears wielding the Keyblade and attacking Ansem the Wise's apprentices. In this scene, Even and Ienzo are seen lying on the ground and Xehanort snatching their hearts, at that moment Braig arrives, who asks what happened, and when he turns to Xehanort, he sticks the Keyblade in his chest. Braig surprised, falls to the ground and exclaims: "Impossible .. you .. had ..". It is unknown when Xehanort regained the ability to use his Keyblade again, but is officially confirmed by in-game videos.

The reason that Xemnas and Xehanort's Heartless do not possess the ability to wield the Keyblade on their own may be because these two beings did not possess a heart of their own, and therefore could not be chosen properly (Roxas and Xion if They had hearts or parts of them, specifically Sora and Ventus's, and for that reason they maintained this ability to use, in fact Xion failed because he only had a few parts of Sora's heart, not a complete heart, unlike Roxas that had Ventus's intact inside). Xehanort's Heartless remedied this problem temporarily when he came into possession of Riku and his heart by creating his own Keyblade from the princesses' hearts, but once Riku vanished alongside his body and heart into darkness, and the Keyblade was eliminated by returning the princesses to their hearts, Xehanort's Heartless lost this control ability.

    Others

    • Kairi: His Keyblade is called Embrace of Destiny and this is given to Riku and he uses it in a small moment in Kingdom Hearts II.
    • XionAt first he couldn't use his Keyblade, until in an unknown way he awakened "Sora's second Keyblade" according to Tetsuya Nomura himself. Like Sora, his basic Keyblade is Realm Chain.
    • Yen Sid: Former master of the Keyblade and mentor to King Mickey. He has never been seen wielding the Keyblade.
    • Eraqus: Master of Terra, Aqua and Ventus. It teaches them to handle the Keyblade and to become masters of it. He carries the Master's Salvage Keyblade.
    • Vanitas: Dark part of the heart of Ventus and apprentice of Master Xehanort. His Keyblade is Empty Quid.
    • Latent Consciousness: It is the empty armor of Terra, in which her feelings reside. Carries the Keyblade after the end.
    • Reminiscence of Vanity: He is a nescient very similar to Vanitas. He is also a secret boss in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. Carries the Empty Quid Keyblade.
    • Read: It is the complete being of Axel. It appears in the games Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It is confirmed that he can wield a Keyblade although he has not been seen using it in battle, from official game videos as well as scans.
    • Noheart: Appears in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, in the Virtual Space. It is, apparently, Master Xehanort's armor, he also carries his Keyblade.
    • Eraqus Armor: Exclusive character from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. It is the armor of Master Eraqus. It possesses your will and feelings, just like the Latent Consciousness of Terra. He also carries his Keyblade, Salva del Maestro.
