Kingdom Hearts (キ ン グ ダ ム ハ ー ツ Kingudamu Hātsu?) Is a series of action role-playing games (RPGs) developed and published by Square Enix. It is the result of a collaboration between the Square and the Disney Interactive studios and under the direction of Tetsuya Nomura. Kingdom Hearts is a Disney multi-setting crossover based on a universe made specifically for the series. Characters from Square Enix's Final Fantasy series also make appearances and interact with the player and other characters. The saga centers on the main character, Sora, in his search for his friends and his encounters with Disney and Final Fantasy characters in their respective worlds. However, in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance characters and elements not related to the Final Fantasy series have been incorporated, and thus turn the saga into a more general mix between Disney elements and the entire Square Enix universe.

Currently, the Kingdom Hearts saga consists of seven games across different video game platforms, with three remakes, and three spin-off games. There are currently titles in development and others to be done. Most of the games in the series have been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, although each game has seen different levels of success. In December 2006, the Kingdom Hearts series sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, with 2,0 million copies in the PAL regions, 3.0 million copies in Japan, and 5,6 million copies in North America. North.

Various types of merchandise have been released alongside the games, such as soundtracks, figures, and guides. Additionally, the games have also been adapted into a series of manga and novels. In the US, the manga stopped production after Kingdom Hearts II vol. 2 due to company problems. Japan has already moved Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days to manga and novels for all games are available.

    Summary

    Characters

Kingdom Hearts has a mix of the Disney universe and Square Enix, the latter of which most come from the Final Fantasy saga although in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance characters from The World Ends With You have appeared, as well as several new characters designed and created by Tetsuya Nomura. Although the series has unique locations for the Kingdom Hearts franchise, most worlds are based on Disney movies. Sora must visit these worlds and interact with the popular characters of the Disney franchise, help them and protect them from their enemies.

Often, Sora's adventures in these worlds closely follow the stories that the Disney movies on which the place is based. In one of the dialogues, Donald Duck tells Sora that he must not interfere with the worlds too much, as such interference could cause problems. The Moguris, small creatures originating in the Final Fantasy saga, are another common element in games. They provide the player stores so that the player can buy, sell or synthesize objects that he needs throughout the game.

    Creation and influences

    Kingdom Hearts (Saga)

The first sketches of Riku, Kairi and Sora

The Kingdom Hearts series is directed by Tetsuya Nomura, who also works as the character designer. Nomura has stated that it is a lively and interesting challenge to keep the main character in all games, Sora, unlike in Final Fantasy. He has also stated that, although many of Disney's characters are not normally dark and serious, there were not many challenges to introduce them into the story, and despite this, their personality shines due to the fact that they maintain their own characteristics.

Although Disney gave Nomura the freedom in how many characters and worlds used in the games, he and his team tried to stay within the traditional roles of the characters and the boundaries of the worlds. When deciding which worlds to include in the game, the development team tried to take into account the worlds with the Disney characters.

The inclusion of specific Final Fantasy characters is based on feedback from fans and development staff. Another criteria for inclusion was whether the characters fit into the Kingdom Hearts story and universe. Nomura was initially hesitant to use characters that would have been designed by himself, as he was not that familiar with these characters.

For Kingdom Hearts II, he changed his mind after receiving pressure from his staff. Throughout the development of the games, Nomura has often left certain events and the connections between the characters unexplained until the release of other games. Nomura does this because he feels that games should leave room for fans to speculate and use their imagination. He claimed that with speculation, even though a game gets old, people can still be happy with it. In Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Tetsuya Nomura has begun introducing characters from other series in the Square Enix franchise, specifically The World Ends With You.

    Main elements

The Gumi Ship is a common element in the saga, serving as a means of transportation for Sora and company when traveling to other worlds. Players can modify and customize these ships through the Gumi Editor.

Another recurring element of the Kingdom Hearts saga is Pepito's Diary or other similar ones, which records the whole story, what happens in each world and its characters and also offers advice and information of a simple nature. The diary also records the results of the minigames that Sora does, as well as the pending missions, allowing players to have it easier to complete it to continue the game.

Another recurring feature is the music of the worlds, all worlds have at least one normal status song, and most have at least one battle theme.

    Playing style

The Kingdom Hearts saga contains the elements of an RPG: 3rd person game and fighting. The games are driven by a linear progression to the next story, almost always in the form of a cutscene, although there are numerous side quests available that provide additional benefits to the characters. Also, there are allies who help the protagonist, Sora. The combat system is in real time, that is, Sora attacks the enemy directly with various actions, such as attack and magic, that are executable during or after the battle.

The games are influenced by Final Fantasy. Like many traditional role-playing games, Kingdom Hearts has an experience point system that determines character development. By defeating enemies, the player gains experience that completes a "level", which makes the character stronger and can make use of new abilities.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories the combat system was altered since Sora fights alone, and all actions in combat can only be executed through playing cards. The combat system is still in real time, where the stage flickers every time Sora encounters an enemy, taking him to a wider field of combat.

In Kingdom Hearts II, the combat system introduced uses a new element in the game mode: Fusion Forms, which allow Sora to use new abilities through his clothing and carry two Keyblades for a limited time (not all shapes have this ability). Magic is easier to perform, and Sora's PM gauge will automatically recharge once it is depleted. Another new element of the game is the Reaction Command, different actions that can only be carried out in specific situations. These actions vary from talking to a character to performing skills in combat.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep introduces new features to the saga, such as Commandos, which allows the use of unique attacks, as well as magic, and the Nexus-D, which allows the player to access various deck commands otherwise available to the game. player. There's also the Right Shot, which allows you to attack a multitude of enemies with powerful attacks. It also introduces Command Styles where the player unleashes a different and more powerful combination of attacks. By filling the command gauge with either attacks or deck commands, the player will be able to execute a powerful final command.

    History

    The origins of Xehanort

Three Keyblade apprentices, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, train under Master Eraqus to become Keyblade Masters. However, one day, a keyblade master, Master Xehanort, mysteriously disappears and at the same time, a species of ferocious creatures known as Nescientes begin to spread throughout the worlds. Terra is sent to defeat the Nescient and locate Master Xehanort. Ventus is prompted to follow Terra by Master Xehanort's mysterious apprentice Vanitas, and Aqua receives instructions from Master Eraqus to go find Ventus and bring him back home. Along the way, Terra slowly begins to lose control over his darkness within his heart, but finds support from Master Xehanort, who seems to understand him.

Terra crosses paths with a young man named Riku and names him as his successor. Ventus befriends another Keyblade apprentice, Mickey Mouse, crosses paths with Vanitas several times, and eventually learns that Vanitas is actually the personification of the darkness of his heart, drawn by Master Xehanort as part. of his plan to forge the legendary Keyblade X, capable of unlocking the real Kingdom Hearts. Ventus confronts Master Eraqus over this, who attempts to kill him to stop the creation of Keyblade X, but falls defeated at the hands of Terra and Master Xehanort, who right after reveals his true intentions.

Terra, Aqua, and Ventus eventually fight Master Xehanort and Vanitas at the Keyblade Necropolis, where they each face their fates: Terra is possessed by Master Xehanort transforming into Terra-Xehanort, but the new Xehanort is defeated. by Latent Consciousness, the armor of Terra controlled by her lost mind; Ventus is possessed by Vanitas, but he, Mickey, and Aqua fight Venitas, Ventus mentally, and Aqua and Mickey physically together, and they manage to destroy Vanitas, Keyblade X, and wipe the Nescient out of existence. But Ventus's heart is damaged and eventually he comes into contact with the heart of a young man named Sora, merging with him. Aqua places Ventus' unconscious body to rest inside the Castle of Oblivion, and begins the search for Terra. Aqua finds Terra-Xehanort in Radiant Garden, where he was sent after the destruction of Keyblade X, and confronts him in an attempt to rescue Terra. During the fight, Terra temporarily regains control of his body, but Master Xehanort quickly regains control and he attempts to remove Terra's heart from the body, but darkness appears and Xehanort begins to fade into it.

When Terra-Xehanort begins to sink into the Realm of Darkness, Aqua follows her and sacrifices her armor and Keyblade to guard Terra's body, while she remains in darkness. Xehanort, now with amnesia, is found by the King of Radiant Orchard, Ansem the Wise, who takes him in as his apprentice. Mickey passes the Master's Title Exam and is awarded the title of Master of the Keyblade by his teacher, Yen Sid. Inside Xehanort, Terra continues to fight Master Xehanort, vowing not to stop until he has foiled Master Xehanort's plans and expels him from his body.

    Sora's journey

Ten years later, the story changes focus and centers on Sora and his friends Riku and Kairi. The first game shows Sora becoming separated from his friends when his world, the Destiny Islands, is invaded by creatures known as the Heartless. During the invasion, Sora obtains the Keyblade, as Ventus's heart still resides within him. Shortly after appearing in Paso City, Sora joins Donald Duck and Goofy, two emissaries from Disney Castle who are searching for the "key" on the instructions of Mickey, their King. The trio travel through different worlds based on Disney movies, sealing the locks on the hearts of the worlds to prevent invasions from more Heartless.

Along the way, they meet the Disney, led by Maleficent, who controls the Heartless. Despite eventually defeating Maleficent, the three discover that Ansem, who has apparently succumbed to darkness, is the true mastermind of the plan. Ansem's plan is to open the door to "Kingdom Hearts", a door that holds the hearts of all worlds, in hopes of reaching eternal darkness. Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeat Ansem and seal the door with the help of Riku and King Mickey from the other side of the door.

After sealing the door to Kingdom Hearts, Sora, Donald, and Goofy begin their search for Riku and King Mickey, finding a mysterious fortress called Castle Oblivion on their way. Upon entering, they begin to lose their memories. The three meet a group of villains with black hoods (Marluxia, Larxene, Axel and Vexen), who are part of a mysterious organization. At the castle, Sora discovers that his memories have been manipulated by a girl named Naminé who had been kidnapped by the Organization. Sora, Donald, and Goofy make their way through Castle Oblivion and eventually find and destroy Marluxia, the lord of the castle, thus freeing Naminé.

In order for them to regain their memories, Naminé puts Sora, Donald, and Goofy to sleep for a year in capsules, and in the process, they must lose the memories of their experience at Castle Oblivion. At the same time, Riku finds himself in the basement of the castle and begins to climb to the first floor with the help of King Mickey. Riku battles three other members of the Organization (Vexen, Lexaeus, and Zexion) and the darkness in his heart, particularly the remnants of Ansem that reside within him, and learns to accept his dual nature between light and dark. Teaming up with the mysterious DiZ, Riku helps him keep Sora and Naminé safe until the former wakes up.

However, a snag in Riku's plan arises and forces him to pursue a young man named Roxas, the thirteenth member of the Organization, in order to awaken Sora. Roxas, who had previously defected from the Organization after questioning his true motives and wishing to meet Sora in person, meets Riku and easily defeats him at first, but Riku succumbs to the darkness that resides within him and takes over. appearance of Ansem. With his newfound power, Riku defeats Roxas and brings him to DiZ, but the ordeal leaves him trapped in Ansem's appearance. With his plan successfully completed, DiZ orders Riku to eliminate Naminé, but Naminé refuses, and instead lets Naminé go with Axel, who turned against Marluxia and chose to help Sora in the Castle of Oblivion and who he was. Roxas' best friend.

    Xehanort is revealed

Seven days after Riku's mission success, Sora, Donald, and Goofy wake up in Twilight Town, not remembering what happened at Castle Oblivion, and resume their search for Riku and King Mickey. Yen Sid tells them about the Nobodies and their leaders, Organization XIII (Xemnas, Xigbar, Xaldin, Saïx, Luxord and Demyx). Afterward, Maleficent is resurrected and teams up with Pete, another Disney villain, to find a new base of operations before resuming her quest for power and taking revenge on Sora. Sora once again travels to many Disney-themed worlds and solves problems caused not only by Maleficent and Pete, but also by Organization XIII, whose members refer to him as Roxas. Meanwhile, Kairi is kidnapped by the Organization. Sora and company meet with King Mickey at Hollow Bastion, who reveals to them that the "Ansem" that Sora defeated on his first journey was actually Xehanort's Heartless, who was a student of the real Ansem, Ansem the Wise, who betrayed him. his master and stole his name, and since then, Ansem the Wise has been missing. In addition, he tells them that Xemnas, the leader of the Organization, is Xehanort's Nobody.

Later, the three arrive at the headquarters of Organization XIII, The Non-existent World, where they have their own artificial Kingdom Hearts, created from the hearts of the Heartless that Sora has defeated. After defeating some members of the Organization, Sora finally reunites with Kairi and Riku, who reveals that Roxas is Sora's Nobody (just like Naminé is Kairi's Nobody) whom he defeated and captured by taking the form of Ansem to reunite him with Sora. As this happens, Mickey discovers that DiZ is actually Ansem the Wise, whom he encounters with a device whose goal is to digitize the artificial Kingdom Hearts. When Sora and company reach them, the system overload causes the machine to explode. Ansem who seems to die from the explosion and Riku recovers his original appearance. At the top of the castle, Sora and his friends fight Xemnas, who uses what is left of Kingdom Hearts to fight them. Refusing to accept defeat, Xemnas separates Sora and Riku from the others to fight them in a final battle that ends in their death. Although trapped in the Realm of Darkness, Sora and Riku are able to return to their world, through the Door of Light, which was mysteriously opened thanks to the light from Sora's heart.

    The Key that connects everything

With the threat of the Heartless and Nobodies seemingly over, Mickey, Donald and Goofy return to Disney Castle, where they find a mysterious message written in Jiminy Cricket's Diary: "We have to free them from their torment again." Mickey digitizes the diary and creates a Sora from the data to uncover the mystery. After purging the diary, Mickey and Data Sora find the origin of the phrase: it was a message from Naminé, who integrated a version of the data of herself in the diary to inform Sora that he is "the key that connects everything. ", and it is his duty to save all the people connected to his heart from their suffering, that is, the real Naminé, Roxas, Xion and Axel, as well as Terra, Aqua and Ventus. Mickey sends Sora a bottled letter telling him about this.

Meanwhile, in the Kingdom of Darkness, Aqua meets Ansem the Wise, who instead of dying in the explosion of his machine that served to encode Kingdom Hearts, was sent there. Ansem, with some of his remaining memories, explains to Aqua his experiences with Sora, which makes Aqua cry with joy, knowing that Sora will come to rescue her and her friends. In the Destiny Islands, Sora makes the decision to venture out to find and rescue his ancestors from their dire fates.

However, after successfully locating the whereabouts of Aqua and Ventus's heart (thus leaving only Terra to be found) Mickey receives from Yen Sid the terrible news that the destruction of Ansem and Xemnas has led to the return of the Master Xehanort. Seeing how Mickey, being Master of the Keyblade, alone would not be enough to deal with what is not "a single Xehanort", Yen Sid orders Mickey to bring Sora and Riku before him to carry out the Examination of the Mark of Mastery and prepare them for their impending battle against Master Xehanort.

    Return of Master Xehanort

Sora and Riku go to Yen Sid and he explains details regarding Master Xehanort. Although at first Sora believes himself capable of defeating Master Xehanort without having to be Master of the Keyblade. However, Riku disagrees with him, and believes that he should take the test in order to prove that he is worthy of wielding the Keyblade, prompting Sora to take the exam as well. Yen Sid orders them to go to the "Sleeping Worlds", where they have to find and awaken seven worlds sunk in sleep after the defeat of Ansem, and seal the seven "Sleeping Locks". If they succeed, they will be named Masters of the Keyblade.

But along the way, Sora and Riku part ways and each finds during their journey a mysterious young man in a black coat linked to Master Xehanort and accompanied by Ansem, Xemnas and Vanitas, whom they believe was defeated long ago. Eventually, Sora's journey takes him to the Non-existent World instead of the Kingdom of Light, where he meets Xigbar and the mysterious young man, who reveals that he is actually Master Xehanort from the past, who was visited by Xehanort's Heartless. devoid of body, who explained the future to him and guided him to fulfill the mission of traveling to different time periods to gather various incarnations of Xehanort and form the true Organization XIII. Sora desperately tries to reach the castle, but Xemnas confronts him and ends up with a damaged heart, leaving him in a coma and being taken to Young Xehanort's castle.

Riku arrives at the castle of the Nonexistent World and finds his friend unconscious. After fighting Young Xehanort aided by King Mickey the fight, Master Xehanort finally revives, and reveals his true intentions: following his failure to create a Keyblade X and summon Kingdom Hearts by making a pure heart fight. Light and a heart of pure darkness, he has discovered an alternative way to create Keyblade X. Many years earlier, after the War of the Keyblades, Keyblade X broke into thirteen darkness and seven lights. Master Xehanort explains that his intention is to create an Organization XIII with his reincarnations, thus forming the Thirteen Darknesses, making them fight against the Seven Lights. He would then restart the Keyblade War, thus creating Keyblade X. As Master Xehanort approaches Sora with the intention of making him his thirteenth receptacle and last member of the new Organization, Lea, Donald, and Goofy arrive to help Riku. and Mickey. Master Xehanort is forced to withdraw along with the rest of the New Organization XIII.

Riku brings Sora's unconscious body back to Yen Sid, where he plunges into the Descent into Sora's Heart and collects the fragments of his friend's shattered heart. During the process, Riku fights against a dark-corrupted armor that protects Sora's heart from it and defeats him. Riku manages to awaken Sora, but Yen Sid only names Riku Master of the Keyblade for his efforts. Sora, undaunted by his failure, congratulates Riku and embarks on a new journey to train on his own. Lea, for her part, surprises everyone present by invoking her Keyblade, something she had recently mastered.

Upon learning of Master Xehanort's plans, Yen Sid orders Riku to bring Kairi before him to teach him how to use his Keyblade and become the seventh light to face Master Xehanort's Organization XIII.

    Content and rating

The Kingdom Hearts franchise also maintains most of the "kid-friendly" content. This includes neglecting profanity and overtly revealing feminine clothing, as well as sexual references. Although these are common throughout the Final Fantasy series, the series prides itself on classic Disney values. There are only four cases in which these rules are broken. In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Axel briefly mentions the word "hell", and in the beginning of the game, he yells "damn". Two more times in Kingdom Hearts II, an example, has a short suggestive content when Sora says, "You make a good couple" in the Land of Dragons to the shame of Mulan and Li Shang.

The main controversy that caused the rating of Kingdom Hearts II in the US to be an unsuitable game for children under 10 was in Port Royal, since this world contains brief scenes of blood, as well as a moment in which Barbossa drinks alcohol. Will Turner also threatens suicide.

In Europe, no game in the series exceeded PEGI's +12 rating. Although there are some cases of soft censorship, in general the Kingdom Hearts series maintains a "kid-friendly" game.
