El sea salt ice cream It is a type of ice cream found in Twilight Town and Radiant Garden. He appears, throughout the Kingdom Hearts universe, but made his first appearance in Kingdom Hearts II. The ice cream flavor mixes both a salty taste and a sweet taste. An interview with Tetsuya Nomura after Kingdom Hearts II explained that Nomura first tried sea salt ice cream on a trip to Tokyo, DisneySea. Tetsuya liked ice cream very much and decided to work with Disney to put it in Kingdom Hearts II. He also said that the idea of putting dessert in the game came to him when he was thinking about what the guys from Twilight Town do and eat during their summer vacation.

History

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

At the Blank Points, Ansem the Wise and Ienzo eat sea salt ice cream together as they walk through a castle hall in Radiant Garden. Axel, Roxas, and Xion are also seen having sea salt ice cream together in Twilight Town like they do in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Roxas and Xion then say Sora's name in unison. During the credits, Lea buys two sea salt ice creams from Uncle Scrooge and gives the other ice cream to Isa.

Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories

During the end credits, Roxas passes Hayner, Pence and Olette in Twilight Town. Everyone has their own sea salt ice cream. Axel also shares his ice cream with Roxas at the top of the station tower after the trio passed, Roxas was sought out by Axel to enter the Organization.

Kingdom Hearts 358 / 2 Days

In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, sea salt ice cream is a recurring plot element of the game and a system icon seen on the first launch of a Nintendo DS. After Roxas completes his first mission and reminds him that they sat there on Roxas' first day that he came into being and was named after him. He then suggested that he and Roxas should eat ice cream every day after they have completed their missions, stating that they go to and from the castle and that was never a boring routine.

After Axel went on his mission to eliminate traitors at Castle Oblivion during the events of Chain of Memories, Roxas and Xion are invited to join him after a successful mission to destroy a dark side. Soon after, Roxas, Axel, and Xion start eating ice cream together after their missions, once Axel had returned alive and all the other members were killed in Castle Oblivion. As Roxas explained to Xion, sea salt ice cream is Axel's favorite flavor.

During a day in the game, called "On Vacation", Roxas had no idea what to do as Saïx had scheduled a break between missions to give the Organization members some time to rest. After rejecting Xion's offer to practice with the Keyblade, he once again looked at the note posted in the gray room. As he looked at the sign that said "Closed for Holidays from Operations," Roxas thought, "What do I do? What do I do?"

He then concluded the stage by saying the word "ice cream" and ended up sharing an ice cream with his friends, even teasing Axel for having slept all day, when Xion asked what they did. Perhaps they indicate that they had learned to taste ice cream since Axel had first given them his first ice cream.

It is revealed in the game that some ice cream sticks have the word "winner" on them. This allows the owner to exchange a free ice cream bar. Axel first notifies Roxas of this in one of their later encounters, after Roxas found a winning suit, but kept it a secret because he wished to have two winning suits for both Axel and Xion. He later gives the stick to Axel as a parting gift when he leaves Organization XIII.

It also acts as a symbol of the friendship between the three, most notably when Roxas embarrassingly asks for Xion while he disappears who is going to have ice cream with them again.

Kingdom Hearts II

Hayner, Pence and Olette also enjoy this ice cream. The three of them often enjoy eating together. When DiZ created the Twilight Town simulation, he made versions of the data to be friends with Roxas and they often had ice cream. In one of Roxas's flashbacks, Axel offers her a bar of sea salt ice cream before their goodbye. After Riku steals the digital Olette Munny bag that he had given Roxas, he asks DiZ what to do with it, and DiZ jokes, "We could always buy a sea salt ice cream."

When Sora arrives at Hollow Bastion, he sees Scrooge McDuck, who is trying to recreate the sea salt ice cream recipe. Through subsequent visits as the story progresses, Scrooge comes closer to reinventing flavor and ultimately success.

Riku left a sea salt ice cream with a photo of Roxas and the Twilight Village gang simulating clues for Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Donald had an immediate liking for ice cream, and Sora is quoted on his second visit to Twilight Town saying, "Donald took it."

It has been shown in the game that Ansem the Wise was very fond of this ice cream, as he often drank it while chatting with King Mickey, sharing it with Ienzo and later used it as the password to his computer in the old mansion, which Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Mickey used to enter the Twilight Town Simulation.

In the Kingdom Hearts II manga, Roxas falls off the clock tower while trying to retrieve the falling ice cream. If you look closely, the ice cream stick had "winner" printed on it.

At the main menu, Sora was eating sea salt ice cream, as the stick is hanging from his mouth.
