    «My friends are my power!» - Sora

Sora He is the protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts saga (except for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts χ), as well as a wielder of the Keyblade. He is an optimistic young man who may seem naive at times, but is well aware of the importance of his adventure. He possesses a strong sense of justice and a relentless heart. He is sometimes impulsive and quick to anger when standing up for his friends, but is always honest about what he says and does.

Sora is four in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, fourteen in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, fifteen during the events of Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts Re: coded, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and sixteen in Kingdom Hearts III. He lives in the Destiny Islands with his best friends, Kairi and Riku. Sora's name is derived from the Japanese word "heaven".

In the box of the Sora figure from Kingdom Hearts III Play Arts X we can find a specific description of the character:

"Chosen of the Keyblade, is the one whose heart light never fails to shine like a beacon of hope. Sora, the brave hero chosen by the Keyblade, has always had a strong sense of justice. After his many battles against "The dark, he has grown up and learned about the world enormously."

"Attracted by his light, many friends have supported him and given him their powers to counteract the darkness: Riku, his childhood friend who he has grown up with on the islands of destiny; Donald and Goofy, two cameras with whom he has shared their adventures from the beginning; and King Mickey, who aids Sora with his own mighty strength. As the world has been engulfed in another battle against darkness, the Keyblade wielder and his friends must rise up against Master Xehanort and thwart his plans to start another keyblade war. "

    Summary

    Development

Although Squaresoft (currently called Square-Enix) originally wanted King Mickey to be the protagonist of the Kingdom Hearts saga, and Disney wanted Donald Duck as the protagonist, the role was finally found for Sora (that's what he was going to be called), Tetsuya Nomura I wanted a human protagonist. From the beginning, Sora was designed as a hybrid between a human and a lion cub, pushing a chainsaw weapon and a lion's head as a chain. Sora's design fusion with the elements of Squaresoft's proposal is referenced, by his original trajectory, which shares many elements with Mickey.

    Sora Sora

    Artwork from Sora's sketches.

The Kingdom Hearts project will have been haunting Tetsuya Nomura's mind for a couple of years before starting a gestation. And with it, the characters were quite different from what they were finally able to find in the game. Initially, the only idea was to unite Mickey and another character created from scratch in an adventure that recorded several Disney movies. The other protagonist would be a young man with lion and human features, a hybrid that eventually ended up being discarded to become the Sora we would finally meet. The first approaches to the character were already with his iconic Keyblade with the Kingdom Chain. He also kept his boots, his gloves and his hair, common in Tetsuya Nomura designs. The main changes were seen in the feline elements: a long tail similar to Simba's, pointed ears with small earrings and small fingers. Later the design was slightly stylized: Sora was now much simpler. Their clothes were smoother, with fewer zippers, and their cakes were smaller. The lion's features were accentuated: he was now covered with hair on his arms and legs, and the gloves on his hands had disappeared, being replaced by lion's claws. Although the hair style was maintained, he had a crown on his head that replaced the iconic Kingdom Chain, thus reflecting his royalty. He had also changed weapons, using the Lionheart keychain that Leon would give him in-game. All this is made clear through the sketches that are used after the title is released. The last and third image was a departure from all of the above and, to a certain extent, also from the final design. It was noticeable influenced by games like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy X: the head was exactly as we would finally see it, but its arms were different: the sleeves, inspired by the costumes of the SOLDIER members (Final Fantasy VII) , and some huge new gloves, like Mickey's own in his monochromatic stage. The clothes were very wide, also similar to the mouse created by Walt Disney, something that would be kept later. The highlight of this latest design is the change to Sora's pendant. Although in its "lion version" it uses a pendant with the classic crown of the series, in the latter it was a sphere, a medal without any other type of graphics. There was also the fact that this third drawing was a simple sketch and unfinished, while the others were perfectly inked and clean.

    Kingdom Hearts Re:coded

Chosen youth of the mysterious Keyblade, whose native island was shrouded in darkness. He embarked with Mickey, Donald and Goofy on a journey to save the world. Jiminy Cricket was in charge of writing down his adventures.

    Personality

    Sora

Sora, in general, is a cheerful, dynamic, charismatic, outgoing boy, absent-minded on more than one occasion, a friend of everyone and with confidence in himself. In Kingdom Hearts, 14-year-old Sora is more of a lazy and innocent boy, but even so, he cares a lot about his friends, whether they are old or new. At the beginning of this adventure, Sora was somewhat insecure and confused, but as he progressed, he grew as a person. In Kingdom Hearts II, we meet a somewhat more mature Sora, aged 15, both physically and psychologically. He becomes more active, somewhat more awake regarding his surroundings and more confident in what he has to do.

Although not officially decided, Sora seems to have a crush on Kairi. He cares a lot for her and tries to see that she is out of harm's way. His shyness is noted when he sees other couples or when his friends say something that involves his relationship with Kairi.

    Customs

    • Cross your arms when you think.
    • He sighs tiredly when something overwhelms him.
    • Lower your head when you are sad.
    • When he waits, he crosses his legs and puts his hands behind his head, just like Ventus does.
    • For fun he makes weird facial expressions.
    • He puts his legs apart and his two hands grasping the Keyblade before fighting.
    • Sora in Kingdom Hearts, when he wins a fight at the Olympus Coliseum, he turns his Keyblade 360 degrees and then places it behind his head. He also does that in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, but when he levels up (both with the keyblade ability and with cards).

    Appearance

Sora changes his clothes on various occasions. In Kingdom Hearts he keeps a wide red, white and blue suit, accompanied by huge yellow shoes. She wears a pendant with the symbol of a crown. Later, in Kingdom Hearts II, which takes place a year later, Sora changes his look for one more appropriate to his age. Now dark colors predominate along with small yellow, red, white and dark blue elements. Finally, in Kingdom Hearts 3D, Sora wears a clothing similar to that of Kingdom Hearts, but predominantly red, he also has a more youthful appearance than adult, so he loses his physical maturity, but retains mental maturity. Otherwise, it remains the same.

With fusion forms, your team can become different appearances for the Brave Form, Sum Form (Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix only), Anti-Form, Wise Form, Master Form, and Final Form. Despite keeping almost all of his abilities intact, Sora changes his appearance on various certain worlds.

    • In Atlantica, Sora turns into a Merfolk. In this world it cannot merge.
    • In Halloween Town, Sora dons a costume similar to that of a vampire. He does not possess any extra abilities, and in fusion forms, he changes both the color of his suit and his mask. In Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix Sora also wears a black Santa Claus outfit in Christmas Town. When using blending forms, change the emblem on the hat.
    • In Paranoid Space, Sora wears a kind of suit similar to a blue robot and when he merges only the suit changes color.
    • In Eternal River, Sora is drawn with fine lines, in black and white, with a minimalist style similar to that of the original short. Merging does not produce any change in Sora, except the number of Keyblades he carries.
    • In Pride Lands, Sora turns into a lion cub. It uses the Keyblade with its mouth, and cannot use fusions or summon.

    Skills

    Main article: Sora's abilities

    Skills granted by enemies

In Kingdom Hearts II, most enemies have Reaction Commands that allow them to be dealt a blow, sometimes fatal. These are the following:

    • Madness: By grabbing Saïx's Mallet or Madder's Sword, you can use "Insanity". This is a very useful and effective skill, as enemies are easily destroyed.
    • Tele-transportation: Sora can teleport thanks to the Snipers, where after they launch their own attack, with "teleportation" Sora rejects the lasers and returns them, taking away VT (vitality). This attack can also be used with Xigbar where it launches a stronger attack that when rejecting it causes more damage.
    • Jump: It is an ability that can be used against Xaldin and the Dragons where Sora absorbs their energy to jump and fall to the ground impacting against enemies. It actually copies the ability to teleport as it can travel distances in a very short time.
    • Mourning: It is an ability that is used against the Samurai. Allows you to attack with a killing blow or be attacked by the Nobody. This depends on whether or not you press in the correct place in the command slots.
    • Game: Allows Sora to stop the time of the Gambler and Luxord and obtain items, but if done wrong, they turn it into a card or dice.

This theme is similar to the one that sounds in Final Fantasy XII when something important happens.

    Curiosities

    • In the Final Mix version of the first Kingdom Hearts, when Sora, Donald and Goofy confront the Stranger, the audio lines of the three are recycled from other scenes in the original version of the game. This is possibly due to the fact that Sora's English voice matured and changed after the years of the first Kingdom Hearts release.
    • The Kingdom Hearts trio are named after the 3 primary elements of nature (common in Japanese culture): Sora means "Sky", Riku means "Earth" and Kairi means "Ocean". This can be related to the main characters in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, where their Latin names are translated: Ventus means "Wind", Terra means "Earth" and Aqua means "Water". This shows us a correlation between the characters and their personalities respectively.
    • The 3 different poses that Sora performs at the end of a round of the Olympus Coliseum are the same as those done by Cloud (Final Fantasy VII), Squall (Final Fantasy VIII) and Yitan (Final Fantasy IX) when winning a battle.
    • The reason why he and Riku looked younger in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is because of the dream realm. The game begins with the appearance of Sora and Riku from the first Kingdom Hearts.
    • Apparently he is in love with Kairi, since he said on many occasions that she is one of the most important things for him and such thought is mutual between Sora and Kairi as well as the feeling, that is, she is also in love with Sora.
    • Sora is the only one so far to be seen wielding 3 Keyblades at the same time, this occurs in his battle with Roxas in Kingdom Hearts II.
