Zampella on Lack of Weekly Updates in Apex Legends: "We don't want the team to be overworked"

"We don't want the team to be overworked and thereby lower the quality of the content we launch." This is how blunt Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn, talking about why Apex Legends doesn't copy Fortnite's weekly updates model. The quality of life of your employees comes first.

Having seen the crunch cases at both Rockstar and BioWare and more recently at Epic Games, it is comforting to know that in a study like Respawn, which like BioWare belongs to EA, the situation is different. At least as regards the development of Apex Legends.

Zampella on Lack of Weekly Updates in Apex Legends: What is crunch and what does someone who has experienced it on their meats think of it

We all like that Fortnite receive constant updates, that every week has playable news and content of all kinds, but after knowing that this means that the development team can do weeks of 100 hours of work, the reality is that the situation is not ideal or of far.

According to Zampella, we will not see weekly updates on Apex Legends simply because they are working well in Fortnite. This is how he expressed it this week during the GamesBeat Summit:

There are a lot of people like “hey, where are the weekly updates, Fortnite does it”. And we answer that we are not prepared for it. It was never our intention. Our goal was always to go seasonal and we will continue like this. The idea was "hey, we have something that is hitting it, do we want to try to introduce more content?" But I think you have to look at the quality of life of the team. We do not want the team to be overworked and thereby lower the quality of the content we launch.

Zampella also acknowledges that the first season of Apex Legends has come out with less content than he would have liked, but the team is already working to correct this for the second season instead of starting to put new content on the fly and in a way. more constant as in Fortnite.
